We need a natural defensive midfielder.

Biton isn't one. Neither is McGregor. We need someone who is purely about tackling and doing the ugly side of the game, while also being able to keep possession well. Who in our squad is capable of that? No-one.

Not having a defensive shield is a big part of why we have been so poor in Europe the past couple years.

Is the man you are looking for... :icon_mrgreen:

I do agree with you though, we do need a * hard * in midfield, a Neil Lennon sort of player who will break up the play and lay it off to the more creative midfielders. These players are rarer to find these days and the foreign market can be deceiving as we have found but there are more Wanyamas out there. At the moment best man for job would be Ajer, he's strong, good tackler and can hold the ball well not to mention hes a * giant so can win headers but for me he isn't a full evil * who will do the gritty stuff but I haven't seen too much of him so time will tell.

Can't see that picture but guessing it's Ambrose or some diddy :smiley-laughing002:

Aye they are harder to find but they are most definitely out there. We should maybe look to South America and round about that area.

I know it's harder to attain work permits however the likes of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and the likes always seem to produce hard wee * who will run for days.

That is going to be such a difficult player to find because it'll be in such demand. Do we want a Medel or Busquets style player? You seen anyone interesting?

    I'd love Charles Aranguiz.

He was out for the whole of last season with Leverkusen, not sure if they still have plans for him.

He is unrealistic but it's someone like that who I would like.

Aye it was lord Ambrose himself, * knows why picture hasn't appeared!

Yeah I agree south America does produce that nitty gritty player who loves to run and just does simple * but permits would be a huge struggle however its worth a scout! I would like to think theres another big Viking * in Denmark who could do job or maybe go somewhere like Croatia, Slovakia ect those guys are tough * and as seen in euros Croatians are on the up technically. Maybe Jozo the Provo could give us some hints.

I even think someone like Muhamed Besic from Everton would be a good fit for there. Can't see him having much future with them.

Just had a wee gander on YouTube, they both look good. Not afraid of going in for a hard tackle although it looks like Besic might have better timing. Aranguiz is definitely better going forward and getting goals it looks like. Both of them technically sound and comfortable on the ball.

Aranguiz is valued at 9m Euros and Besic 6m Euros.

I actually prefer the look of Besic as he seems more defensive and he's cheaper. We could afford him too if that valuation is anywhere near correct. I imagine there would be a few clubs in for him though. Plus those * EPL wages are an obstacle too.

Would be great to find a player like that from abroad.

Besic was brilliant at the world cup 2 years ago and I wanted us to move for him then.

He was only 20 at the time as well and is now still only 22/23. Had a decent spell with Everton in the 2nd half of the season there but I still believe he'd jump at the chance to come here. I really like his style.

Aranguiz is a bit of a dream aye I'll admit that but he's another who was outstanding at the world cup.

You also have Kara Mbodj at Anderlecht. He plays mainly as a centre half for them but played DM at Genk and Tromso. Big, imposing figure at 6ft 4. He'd cost a bit, mind.

If we shifted a few of our midfielders and brought a type like one of them in alongside perhaps a Joe Allen style I'd be ecstatic.

The Benfica man on here posted elsewhere that they are after him for £2m. We should be rivalling them.

    The Benfica man :smiley-laughing002:

It's hard to tell from an international tournament, but £2m seems to be a snip.

Personally if Broony is fit I would play him as a purely defensive midfielder. On his day he is one of the best tackling midfielders we've got, and we have more creative players who can play further up from him.

Still gutted we sold Kayal :54:

    Sorry, Luz1904!

Anyway aye, that'll be in Euros as well maybe so even cheaper. I haven't actually seen him so can't comment, I'm only jumping on the bandwagon admittedly. Seen plenty say he has played well and if Benfica are sniffing then the guy must have something about him.

What an imposing figure Kara Mbodj is, looks like he would be a great enforcer in midfield and he can score a screamer too. 4.5m Euros.

I just seen some footage of Adam Nagy when he was 18 and he looks excellent although he was playing more attacking midfield then. If he can play DM with those attacking skills he must be worth a punt. If Benfica are after him it says a lot, ideal price for us too. Just shows you there is quality and value to be had.

Our scouts are due another good season.

There's no footage of Glenn Whelan apart from the Italy blockbuster goal and Eamon Dunphy ripping him and McCarthy apart. Those Irish pundits don't mess about.

As Monaghan said, Bitton isn't a natural defensive midfielder. He sits deep but he's not one to do the dirty work on a regular basis and shield the defence. He's too lightweight for it.

McGregor is far better offensively than defensively. Brown is more box to box - too reckless to be a reliable defensive midfielder. Ajer has been played in all sorts of roles in midfield, by all accounts he's still to actually find his best role. Johansen, let's not be silly.

I'm not even talking about a 4231. If we go with 433, then the centre of the 3 has to be good defensively. Think of Lucas at Liverpool. He never gets far up the pitch, he tends to shield the defence and keep it simple.

Of course it's unlikely we'll find another player as good as Wanyama, but I mean we need a player like him i.e. a brick wall.

Scott Browns time as a first team player will shorty be over at Celtic mate, Brendan likes his players first and foremost to be very good footballers who are comfortable with the ball and will rarely ever misplace a pass. All skills Brown does not have. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brown play no part in the qualifiers due to Brendan not trusting him, he'll take a look at him during pre season and be unimpressed imo. Said it in another thread Browns best days are well behind and we need to plan a new first team future now without him.

With our current squad I think the first team will be something like this:

    Gordon

    Lustig Erik Simunovic Tierney

    Brown Bitton Johansen

    Roberts Griffiths Commons

Need a left winger, so that was between Commons and McGregor but I imagine Commons will start for the qualifiers at least.

The man in the middle for Rodgers is usually the passer that can control the game, that's Bitton for us. The two next to him are workers who can get up and down the pitch, get on the ball and cover for others. Perfectly suited for Broony and Johansen.

Can see McGregor coming in throughout the season though, in any of three positions there.
