Should Brendan Rodgers be unveiled as manager of Celtic, he will have no need for an autocue. Finding the right words won’t be an issue.

There will be a tribute to the late Tommy Burns for giving him his coaching start at Reading.

He will speak of a childhood in Carnlough listening to crackly medium wave commentaries of Celtic games on the radio.

Then he will tell of growing up in a family of Celtic fans in the 1980s with images of Danny McGrain and Packie Bonner on the wall.

A degree of cynicism over this stuff is usually wise. Club affiliations can be quickly acquired.

Yet we can predict with some confidence what the former Liverpool manager might say at a Parkhead Press unveiling for one reason. He has said it all before.

In August 2011, to be precise, when Celtic played a pre-season friendly at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.

Neil Lennon was newly confirmed as the permanent manager, Swansea were days away from their opening Premier League game against Manchester City and three members of the Scottish print media — this correspondent included — chanced our arm to ask Rodgers for a few minutes of his time.

Ushering us all to the tunnel area for some peace to speak, he cut an articulate and engaging figure.

‘I think all my family would love me to be Celtic manager in the future,’ he said that night. ‘If you look at your Northern Ireland managers — Martin O’Neill and Neil Lennon would have walked to be the Celtic manager and I’m no different.

‘But I hope to be in football for another 25 years and you never know where the journey will take you.’

Within a year, the journey took him to Liverpool. But for a Steven Gerrard slip against Chelsea, it might have delivered a Barclays Premier League title.

That he came so close with one of England’s largest clubs is one of the reasons — the others are financial — why people have found it too difficult to believe Rodgers can be in the stratosphere of Celtic or any other SPFL club.

It is 16 years since Martin O’Neill quit Leicester City, a club in the top half of the English Premiership, for Glasgow. Since then, the financial gulf has grown to a level where even luring the manager of Norwich City or Brighton north now seems a stretch.

Reported to have rejected £3million a year to return to Swansea, Rodgers would earn nothing like that cash at Celtic.

As Sportsmail first revealed, the Scottish champions have been willing to make either Rodgers or David Moyes the highest-paid manager in the club’s history from the moment Ronny Deila resigned.

But if Rodgers accepts, it won’t be for the money. Instead he will cite a boyhood spent worshipping Burns, McGrain and even Anton Rogan from afar; from the tiny Irish village of Carnlough.

As he enthused five years ago: ‘I know all the words you know: “Tommy twists, Tommy turns, there’s only one Tommy Burns”. He was a wonderful player, with a great left foot.

‘Celtic were my boyhood club. I was an Irish boy, brought up in a little village where obviously a lot of the people were Celtic supporters. I followed Celtic all my life and always watched how they got on.

‘I remember listening to the radio and watching the Celtic games when the likes of Danny McGrain and Packie Bonner were playing. And big Anton Rogan when he was there — that was probably my era.

‘Billy McNeill would have been manager and terrific players like Peter Grant, Paul McStay and Brian McClair were playing and obviously my good friend Tommy. What a player he was.’

Rodgers retains a debt of gratitude to Burns, the former Celtic manager who lost his battle with Melanoma in May 2008.

His playing career at Reading cut short by injury at the age of 20, Burns asked him to coach the kids. He would move on to work as Jose Mourinho’s reserve-team coach at Chelsea.

An astute media operator, Rodgers was asked five years ago if Burns, rather than Mourinho, was his Special One. He saw the headline coming.

‘Tommy Burns was a hero, a great man and a good friend of mine,’ he replied, arms folded tightly.

‘Tommy was a special man. He actually brought me into Reading when he was manager there many years ago.

‘I was working part-time and he brought me in there. He was a real special guy with great football knowledge and we would sit and talk football for hours and hours. When I was at Chelsea, I even used to fly up and see him.

‘I used to stay up in Glasgow and the last time I saw him, bless him, was when I went to Celtic v Hearts and Celtic won 5-0 at Parkhead. We talked and that was in August 2007.

‘Obviously he took ill in the February and before I knew it he had died, bless him. But he was a great, great football man and I think at his funeral you saw the respect he had from both sides.’

Burns remains a much-loved and missed figure at Celtic. Rodgers learned from his man management abilities, while his teams also play aesthetically pleasing football.

Yet, like Burns, his teams have also won less than they might have.

Nevertheless, the acquisition of Rodgers would represent a significant investment, even before the rumoured £15million transfer budget.

Season-ticket sales are said to be sluggish. The new manager’s large salary could be quickly absorbed by adding another 5,000 to last season’s total.

Rodgers famously worked with a transfer committee at Liverpool after refusing to operate under a director of football.

His relationship with Peter Lawwell — assuming the chief executive hangs around — will be a source of intrigue.

Yet the most critical relationship could be with Dermot Desmond, the major shareholder.

‘I am not a power freak,’ said Rodgers during his Anfield days.

‘But my point is that I need to feel I can manage the team and have a clear line through to the owners.’

Like O’Neill before him, then, Rodgers would seek a direct line to Desmond in Dublin.

He will draw, also, on the stories and anecdotes shared with Burns over tea and jaffa cakes.

‘I have so much to thank Tommy for because he gave me an opportunity,’ said Rodgers in 2011.

‘Everyone talks to me about my relationship with Jose Mourinho and I’ll always be grateful for that because he gave me the chance at the very top end.

‘But I go back to my days as a very young coach.

‘Tommy was a guy who saw something in me.’

Think he has agreed mate. But with him still being paid by Liverpool it comes down to agreeing a 'cut off fee' with Rodgers. They are due him an amount, so they will give him half and everyone is happy. Then it's Rodgers wage, staff and of course transfer kitty. We don't need 10 players, just 5 maybe...and a good clear out. I am guessing, but it looks like it is a done deal. I don't bet but everyone I know tells me it's a done deal when the bookies close the books or have 1/10 or something...Don't understand it all..Celtic met him twice. First time was "Hey, want a job"...Second meeting lasted 5 hours I am told...All of the above needs talked about. These contracts are commission based also. If Rodgers gets us Champions League he gets a bonus. A LOT to go over....

Typical of Celtic to keep us all waiting. The interviews could have been done weeks ago. Ronny said he was leaving, Rodgers was out of work, Moyes was out of work, Malky, Lennon, etc, all out of work. It wouldnt have been disrespectful to Ronny, he knew he was gone and knew they had to get someone ffs. They didnt need to announce it til after Ronnys last game. I think whats making this more unbearable is the fact that we have more big name possibilities than ever before who seem interested, yet every one of us has the fear that Celtic are gonna kick us in the balls again and appoint a cheap option. I would love to stay off this site and just be patient, but every half hour i have a need to check, just in case.

He will be on a modest wage ( probably 25-30k) , but will get a huge signing bonus, couple of million quid wouldn't suprise me . Clubs do it with players (especially free agents) all the time . Particularly the younger ones who want to get rich quick incase of injury.

Guy keeps saying stuff like Mon and lennon walking to this job, and he would as well. Family want him to take the job, his love for the club and burns etc.

This is the sort of stuff that makes someone take a job irrespective of money (almost).

I honestly get the impression that he will be the sort of guy who will look at this and think, Liverpool have given him a life time of money, celtic can give him a more than modest living wage (for his industry) and would be quite happy to cut his 'loss' with the Liverpool deal.

I'm sure the couple days here he (agent) has been working at a deal to get the best deal from both celtic and liverpool, but when(if) pushed to having to forgo the rest of the Liverpool money, I honestly think he will let that slide for this job.

The only big question is what transfer kitty and back room staff he gets.

A Rangers fan in my work was asked by another Rangers fan what he thought about Brendan Rodgers being Celtic manager.

His instant response was "don't care, don't care about them".

I went "Oooh, he's scared!", to which he replied "what do I have to be scared about, it's just football".

The same guy was ranting about how "scared" we were about them coming back up to the Premierahip! Hahaha, fickle *, the guy was so dismissive he just didn't want to talk about it.

Only thing help Rodger settle quicker. The players should be used to training for free flowing football. Ronny should have them better equip to follow Rodgers free flowing style. I say he take job. He is Celtic fan and it help swing it over line for us. Let hope he can get few Liverpool best talent on loan next season or sign few there unage boys. Liverpool always have decent youth set up.

all ive seen is them fuds spouting whats rodgers ever won as a manager .....you can imagine my awnser .....the loaf has won nout until he signed at sevco plus hes never managed a big team like ourselves and liverpool.
