If I recall correctly, the vast majority of West Brom fans wanted Clarke out by the end.

    I really don't think he's all that.

Nah from what I recall the Clarke sacking was pretty unexpected. He'd had a good run with them then one bad month and the board shat it.

Was very popular with the players too.

What about Owen Coyle? He always get's a mention.

I thought Clark was a hun? We need a Celtic man in charge.

WBA finished 8th under Clarke in his first season, his first full season in management. When he got sacked it was after a quick run of poor results which saw them 16th at December. His sacking didn't even make that much of a difference, they were still fighting with Norwich to stay up on the final day of the season and finished 17th and just 3 points ahead anyways.

You don't finish 8th with a side like WBA (who's target was to stay up) if you're a * manager. You don't get a championship side to the semi-finals of the FA Cup (and take the 3rd best Premier League side to extra-time where a keeper mistake costs the team) if you're a * manager.

In fact 8th place is WBA's highest finish in the Premier League era and their best top division finish since 1981.

I think Clarke has proved himself a good manager with both Reading and West Brom in his own right, so I don't think the argument holds he is only a good No.2.

You are right nobody knows for sure if we would have been in a definite better position with Clarke installed last time as Celtic manager, and I believe he was interviewed the last time and he actually thought that he had landed the job from what I can gather.

However I think it is fair to suggest, that arguably Clarke would have been a steadier pair of hands than Ronny, and would have kept the dressing room strong, healthy and in tune with the manager's aspirations and ideas, that in itself leads me to think, that we would indeed have been in a healthier position today if Clarke had got the job two years ago.

I have put forward a persuasive and detailed argument for hiring Clarke in a cogent form.

I look forward with interest to hearing any counter arguments, and cogent and detailed arguments by other posters on their man.
Not just plucking names out of the ether and chucking them in the mix.
They need to stand up to intense scrutiny.

    Good points.
I think Clarke is just reminding the Celtic board that he is here, eager and willing. And also the fact Clarke has mentioned Rangers coming back up as healthy for Scottish football, could be in tune with the boards thinking, if you follow me. Clarke is saying he is ready, willing and able for the Ranger's challenge, hire me.
I forgot also to say that Steve Clarke also coached under Rudi Gullit.
Clarke has a very impressive CV and the steelness of mind to be a success as Celtic manager, considering he always wanted to play for us when he was with St Mirren and also manage us, and yet he still keeps coming forward pushing his name and interest in the job.
I like that kind of persistence and doggedness in a man.

The other part is factually correct though. He has won less than 'warbles'

All the talk of big name managers coming ain't going to happen with lawwell and his cronies still at the club,I don't think the board want a old school type manager anymore can honestly see another Delia type appointment, head coach rather than a manager.

I wish we would get a director of football. With the kind of club the board wants us to be we need something to give us consistency even when we switch managers - we should look at clubs like Southampton in that respect

I don't think they can afford to take the risk this time around, they had a bit of breathing space when Ronny came in so went with the experiment,it could have went either way but ultimately failed.
Luckily the leagues almost in the bag,how I don't know.Next season will be tougher with a revived Aberdeen,Hearts, them and possibly Hibs.
This time round they can't afford to get it wrong, hopefully they realise this and give us the best chance possible and bring in a proven manager.

Paul lambert is someone who should get good consideration, look at aston villa now he did an amazing job with them and previously at norwich with the promotions. Could well leave Blackburn and I think he could well turn out to be a dark horse.

When does the DoF system ever work though?

Hearts are the only club that have had success with it and even then they're a provincial club with a bigger budget than most of their opponents, there's no way conclusively tell they wouldn't be doing as well with just a manager.

Look at the shambles they are in now, players not giving a toss, relegated with 6 games to spare. Ok he didnt make them a top 10 team but look at the decline since he left that says it all.

Would love the big man back in some capacity. Favourite player when he was here, and he'd take no * from anyone, Lawwell included. A true Celtic legend.

I've been reading up on him more plus watched him on Goals on Sunday and I'd definitely take him.

Not ahead of Moyes or Lennon though, he'd probably be my 3rd choice now, comfortably ahead of Keane.
