McCann had his faults but he made 3 promises before he stepped in that 1) He would save us from bankruptcy 2) He would rebuild the stadium 3) He would stop 10 in a row and he delivered on all 3 and for that reason he will always be a legend in my eyes. I remember the Sun ridiculing him before he took over and describing him as "some guy who sells boats for a living" when in actual fact his wealth was well off the radar.

Ye yi do, know plenty of lads that boo'd that day that still have no time for McCann, most of them because of his treatment of Tommy, their dislike of the man has probably increased since Tommys passing. Personally I thought he was great for the club, ruthless, yes but he got the job done, a job that was desperately needing done, he knew when to spend and when not to spend, he seen right through Murray and didnt fall for his taunts, and as I said previously he stood up for our club against the hierarchy of the SFA and won.

He had his faults of course he did. He also done a lot of wrong, shunned people who put in years of effort to pave the way for him to take over after using them to get what he wanted.

Then people were * terrified of losing 10 to those mutants and many felt we even could have stopped 9 with a little more ambition. All of that and more that I've covered on here culminated in Wim walking after stopping the 10 just pushed a lot of people over the edge.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I still maintain that people had the right - at the time - to voice their displeasure at things happening in the club.

Cant really articulate my thoughts well on this * phone, will post some more on this tomorrow when back home.

All I will say is, history has been kind to Fergus and rightly so, but to call the booing shameful is to ignore the circumstances at the time.

I agree, we Fergus didn't do himself any favours by sacking Win Jansen and Tommy Burns, personally speaking I could never for give him for these deeds.

Yes he delivered on the stadium to a certain degree, worth remembering that the club were still left with a debt of £24 Million for the stadium when he departed these shores.

I did enjoy it when he brought Mr Farry to his knees, however his treatment of others was not so palletable, many at Celtic Park were simply trampled into the dust.

Interesting last 3 posts, like I said, he wasn't a nice man to work with but he was a hardnosed business man who set us up for the last two decades of success. He done that when we were beyond rock bottom.

He done exactly what was needed. The fans couldn't understand that back then, with hindsight you know why he was making those decisions and those decisions worked for us, in the long term.

Still though, I wish he'd said aye to signing Jaap Stam.

Which goes to show the slippery slope we could have went into, there's tons of stories like this.

Need to draw the line somewhere. We drew it after the three amigos, Thom and Stubbsy.

I was a kid when I first started supporting Celtic, so I didn't know who Fergus McCann was except in nebulous terms; whenever I heard grown-ups talking about him, it was always the same way that newscasters reported on war criminals, so I thought he was a bad guy.

Hearing about him from actual fans, what he did for the club, and reading various books over the years that went into Celtic's history, my opinion rapidly shifted. :celt_2: :celt_2:

I would vouch for him to be our next recipient of a statue.

Possibly the most important man in our history. Saved the club which we should never forget and always be grateful.
