The fans spearheaded by Matt McGlone and the rest put the pressure on the boardroom that eventually allowed Fergus to come in well after yer other man put up the million quid to stop receivership.

McCann totally re-organised our club into the model we see today. Professional being the key word. I'm not sure how much of his own money he invested but he got it all back and then some, it was the ordinary punters who paid for the whole party with the share issue. I think people should remember that.

I'm not trying to be anti Fergus McCann far from it I acknowledge that he played a big part in turning around our fortunes and he left with a fortune like he said he would. Fair play to him. But to say that he saved the club is both a simple and revisionist way to look at things, it's also not true.

People who say Fergus McCann saved the club are people who say Churchill is the reason the allies won the second world war. It sounds good but it's simply not the truth. Things are more complicated than the soundbites suggest and saying them really does do a disservice to plenty of men and the ordinary fans who deserve as much credit as Fergus McCann.

Must admit, two of th most shameful things we've done as fans is boo McCann and boo Brian Quinn.

Of course, you'll never meet a * who said they did now.

I wasn't at the game but I know people who were and they admit it. Looking back though as fans we felt robbed at how Wim left the club. Think back to the time, I dont know anyone who backed McCann at the time when he was butting heads with Wim or more specifically his wee lapdog Jock Brown was. There was genuine ill will at how that situation played out between fans and boardroom. We all felt that they drove the man who stopped 10 out and I think they probably did in all honesty. Looking back it is easy to say that the booing was harsh and it was but remember back to the time and think about it in context.

I have noticed that as well however you can usually work out if they did or didn't from the stance they take in other things now :86:
Aye Quinn should be thanked as he took us back from following a very bad road. Still these * on the board haven't a clue do they ..

As for the comparison with Churchill and McCann, obviously neither on their own could have 'won' but individually they had the personality, the drive, sheer * mindedness and the will to see that their side won.

Fergus is exactly what we needed, he wasn't a particularly 'nice' business man. He was a hard nosed wee *, straight edged as *. Exactly what we needed and probably the 2nd most influential man in our history after Brother Walfrid. We owe him everything.

I'm not a 'Lawwell basher' as such, I do have some issues with him but I do know he is very good at his job. I'd have Brian Quinn before him every time, a genius at his job and a good man from everything I've seen about him.

The two deserved more support at the time, not just in hindsight.

I suspect the same will happen with Lawwell. Least we've never booed him.

Well I have the courage to say that I was firmly against McCann at the time the reason was because I think he let his ego get in the way over what was best for business and best for the club by extension. To this day I still think this is true but I have softened my stance and I am genuinely grateful for the part he played at that time.

I never had a problem with Brian Quinn and I dont remember there being a problem with him and with other supporters, maybe someone will enlighten me?

It might look like I am anti McCann with my posts but Im really not, im just challenging the notion that he saved the club. He played a part yes but so many other people did as well and it does those men a disservice to say that it was all the bunnet

I think a majority of booing after Maribor, was aimed directly in Lawwell's direction..

I cant disagree with any of that mate. I can only imagine what internet forums would have been like back then, when wee Fergus was doing his thing :smiley-laughing002:
If history has shown us anything , its that we have been very lucky with those who are on the board in general. Value what you have, for tomorrow it may be gone.:50:

i think I'm Lawwells biggest critic on here and not once have I said he has done a bad job nor do I think people will look back on his time and say otherwise. He can be doing so much better though and he should not be above criticism just because he keeps us in the black, he has made mistakes.

His own personal strategy has potentially cost us more than his penny pincing has saved us. I am talking about CL revenue that we would otherwise have earned had he done things differently and I'm going back to the days of Steven Fletcher here and right up to present day. He should not be above being put under the microscope for his failures.

Pretty much all of it was. There was also plenty singing for him to get to *. A week later though, after a scripted interview, all was rosy again though, and the blame was deflected away from himself. Got to hand it to him, he has a lot of the fans wrapped around his finger.

I meant when he's out unveiling the flag. There's been * out booing him in the parking lot as well.

Murphy's right though, Lawwell's PR is beyond anything Fergus or Quinn bothered with.
