As I've said before, I think the main reason for Stokes not playing, is Stokes himself. It's not as if Deila has never fancied him, as he was in the team for a large spell last season. You don't fall that far out the picture unless there is a good reason for it in my opinion.

It's that part I'm referring to mate, he was clearly fancied last season. Deila said he hasn't had the option of 2 up front since he's been here, Stokes was first choice on the left for a large part of last season. How did he not have that option?

Because he wants one of the two to be a big target man.

He had Guidetti last season. Who was actually on fire at this point.

He never mentioned a target man though, just the option of 2 up front. If the only thing you think of with that is 'big guy, little guy' then that's a tactical limitation for me.

Guidetti's not really a target man though. I don't really know what he's thinking, but we know that he prefers to play with one central forward in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation. That's what he's done with Celtic and Strømsgodset. I can just guess that the idea is that if you're going to put another striker in he needs to offer something physically different from what you would expect from your midfielders. Stokesy's strong point is his link-up play but you would expect good link-up play from your attacking midfielders. Maybe Ronny feels that kind of change wouldn't really add something different from our standard formation, while Cole is very different from our midfielders

Agreed, can't help but think of Stooper in that regard.

Guidetti is a target man for me, at least the way he played for us. Always wanted to be right up sitting on the two centre backs and bullying them, he was most comfortable when his back was to goal and he was occupying two centre backs.

Case in point, Griffiths hat trick against Kilmarnock last season, we were shocking first half, moved two up front. Guidetti just occupied the two crntre backs, ragdolled them about, held the ball up and linked with Griffiths. It allowed Griffiths to do whatever the * he wanted, centre backs couldn't get him because Guidetti was operating right next to them and taking the ball in, Griffiths was everywhere.

That's how you can do a partnership up top. When we move to 442 it sacrifices the attacking midfield, I don't really like the way we go when it's 442 the wingers set too far up the pitch and we tend to sacrifice the midfield. It's unimaginative for me.

    Yorke and Cole :50:

I know this thread is about Ronny but I have to say that regarding Stokes, I think there's still hope. If there's one thing Ronny has proved it is a willingness to give second and third chances if the player is good enough. I think there's still hope for everyone other than Derk (and possibly Blackett).

Guidetti comes close, but for me a proper target man needs to have some aerial ability too. Can't remember ever seeing Guidetti with both of his feet off the ground at the same time :smiley-laughing002: Guidetti and Ciftci are the same type of player imo.

Ah, I get you. I just take it as someone who can be a target, you can give the ball upto and he'll hold it until other folk get around him. We played Hooper like that in his final season.

Whereas Griffiths is good in the air, wins it an insane amount against bigger guys but is never a target man.

It depends whether the player wants to take his second or third chance. Like Griffiths did to be fair to him.

Derk doesn't even play for the development side anymore Ronny has clearly made his mind up that he has no future
Stokes might get another chance but I think he will be sold in January

He is a * psychopath with 4 Glocks and shotgun in his shed. Anyone really going to have the bravery to turn him away?

On second thought, he isn't a psychopath, they usually have the ability to be quite charming and friendly. He's just your regular * crack pot.

I just think at some point this season Stokes will be playing again but it's all down to Stokes to impress Ronny if he wants to play

Aye he's a perfect chest down target man, but surprisingly * (or ridiculously lazy) in the air..

I always relate a target man to a big Jan or even a Cole here now but guy's like Hooper (who doesn't score headers) would be classed as a target man in the 1 up role. The guy ended up a really good all rounder but for not a big guy, he absolutely dominated back line's physically..
