Stilian Petrov

Great player for Celtic. He scored a goal against Stuttgart at Celtic park from such an acute angle that it is one of the best goals I've ever seen scored. Still can't believe it went in!

I liked this guy as a player. I only saw him twice in the hoops though and mostly remember him from his Villa days. I still watch the Stuttgart game atleast once a month.

 

He signed a new contract so we could get money for him. In the end he left with our good wishes.

 

And he scored that goal v Stuttgart!

 

To follow on from this, I see it's been stated he signed a new one year contract so we could get money for him, Big F*cking Wow. We complain now about our great club nowdays being a stepping stone for many players to a big pay day in the BPL, truth is back in Martin O'Neill's days players then saw us as a stepping stone as well. Of course Stan was a cracking player for us and I in no way would wish illness or hard times on any person, but I have to say I do feel many of our Ex players exploit our great club & supporters generosity. At times it seems a bit like when they fall on hard times, fall into ill health or have some cause they want to organise a charity match for, well Call Celtic as they pack out the Stadium or will bring a large travelling support. Of course Charity is part of our clubs ethos, but at times it does appear like double standards from ex players who are only too happy to leave to further their careers, which in itself is fine but then years later when they've ran out their time with these other great clubs that they had to move on to 'better' themselves, well for me it is patronising to our Club & Supporters to come calling to us to help out and then play the whole emotional trick in front of the cameras and state "These are the best supporters in the world".
Yes I know this may seem bitter, but for me if a player here decides they've had enough of Celtic and openly force a move away then they really should be looking to all these other clubs that they saw as such a big draw away from us.

 

Stan was here for 7 years. That's one big * stepping stone.

 

7 years of great service the guy gave. He was an outstanding player and leader for us.

He also left under Strachan not under MON, I can't recall any of our first XI wanting to leave in the MON era, other than Larsson who again you couldn't begrudge him a move to Barca.

 

By signing a new contract knowing he was going to leave ment we made Celtic got millions of pounds that Stan could easily of had for himself if he'd left on a free,he'd of been in a much stronger position to negotiate higher wages and a huge signing on fee

 

7 years he may have been here but at best it was 6 years with the first team as the first year he signed he was prospect squad player with limited appearances.
I suppose it depends on what way you want to look at commitment or years of service to a club.
I just think it can be patronising from ex players to come back here an talk about Celtic being the Best Club with the Best Supporters when at the same time they where happy enough to leave it all behind. Henrik left for Barca, but in Stan's case he left here for Aston Villa, not really comparable in my eyes. Again its all about personal opinions, I rate Celtic as a Far Bigger Club than the moderately successful Aston Villa (Despite dwarfing us with their income & the money they pay out on player contracts & wages)The only reason any player would leave a Bigger Club like ours, for a new challenge at a club like Villa is £££'s
If a player feels they need to move elsewhere to better themselves, it shows they fallen out of love for our club. Football should be driven by passion, falling in love with a club and being successful should be fuel'd by that passion and drive the player and club onto being the best they can be. Yes we all have gratitude for their performances but when these players come back we really should remember why they moved on..........

Was my favourite player too when he played for us. Him and Bobo I liked the most out O'Neills team.
