Someone walks up with the intention to shoot and they think that a school teacher, who can only truely be aware of the situation until the attacker draws their gun, is going to draw their gun like a Holywood action star and gun the attacker down without any other casualties. The sad thing is that they are the biggest threat to world safety there is. They are the biggest warmongerers, the greediest, most wasteful and most polluting * in the world. Their cattle ranches are the biggest contributer to greenhouse gasses in the world. But hey, a 20 stone Yank must be able to get a burger without waiting for it to be cooked. I wish someone would do the whole planet a favour and annihilate that disgusting country.

 

Only an American could think that the solution to idiots murdering people with guns is to give more idiots guns.

What a lot of people are seemingly dismissing or not taking into account is that firearms, much like the alcohol & tobacco industry, is huge * business in the US.

In 2012 somewhere around $6 billion was generated by companies who produce and sell firearms and ammunition.

$5.1 billion federal and state taxes were generated by the industry in 2012, and in the same year Smith & Wesson generated $136 million in revenue in one quarter.

Smith & Wesson have seen their profits go up by 140% since Obama got elected, as US citizens anticipated a cracking down on gun control.

There are nearly 300,000 jobs in the US related to the firearm industry, in which over $10 billion in wages are paid annually, and that doesn't include the various companies who process the 16 million+ background checks that are made every year when a firearm is purchased.

In the three years leading up to 2011 there was a 30% increase in employment in the firearms industry as well.

In 2013 there were just over 11,500 deaths as a result of gun-related homicide. This year thus far there's been just a shade over 10,000 at the time I write this.

Alcohol accounts for over 90,000 deaths per year in the US, whilst a whopping 480,000 deaths per year are believed to be caused by tobacco.

In short, the logistics of "banning" firearms, even if the Government actually wanted to would be impossible without shitloads of issues.

They don't want to though, because the harsh truth is that less than 15,000 deaths per year isn't reason enough to put a multi-billion dollar industry to bed.

After a school shooting in Newtown in 2012 there was what can only be described as the biggest surge in "discussion about gun control" that the US had seen in decades.

This resulted in the stock value of Smith & Wesson to drop by over 5%, which was around $30 million.

That kind of * doesn't fly in a Capitalist society. When the choice of less than 15,000 people per year or billions in profit for big business and the Government is to be made there'll only ever be one winner.
