    Every team that wins a League have bought it though really, it's the only way.

    Nobody is going to win the English League on free transfers and players on cheap wages, they've got to have half a team of £40million+ players.

    My point is, Man Utd fans were constantly going on about how Man City and Chelsea simply bought the title, and now, Man Utd are arguably the worst of the lot when it comes to spending money. I wouldn't say it was the only way either. Look at Atletico when they won La Liga, I wouldn't say they bought the league, and they were up against better teams than anything the EPL has to offer.

    The difference is Man Utd have built themselves up to be able to spend this kind of money. I'd love to know when the last time was that they didn't turn over a profit as a business despite spending hundreds of millions.

    On the other hand Chelsea & Man City were * until there billionaire owners came in and 'bought the title' I think that's where the saying comes from.

    Since 1995 the EPL has been won by a team with one of the three biggest wage bills. In 1995 Blackburn won it with the fourth biggest.

    That is probably the thing Ferguson deserves most credit for. I am reading Paul Lake's book at the minute and he points out how when he was coming through( mid-late 80's) City's youth set up was acknowledged by everyone to be streets ahead of Utd's.
