Perils of the business, though. Do you want to keep a guy who doesn't want to be there?

Its about ambition though, they could gamble and increase a players wage and look to build a strong team capable of challenging in Europe

It's all well and good saying that but there is a wage structure in place for a reason - we don't have the money to pay higher wages . We are barely profitable now with our current wage structure. Until turnover improves greatly we wont have the funds to pay bigger wages.

    Well done sir exactly right.

To answer the question no I do not think we will win the a European trophy with Delia. I didnt think we would with one with Lennon either but in all honesty I would say that it was a good bit more likely with Lenny. Lenny was as shrewd as they came when it came to adapting us to face the opposition. Delias team plays the same no matter what. Admirable but will not bring European success unless he improves drastically in regards to tactics and gameplans.

As a club policy we should be actively targeting winning the Europa within 5 years, We should be looking at 3rd place finishes in the CL and a decent cup run. I dont think we would do it but it should be actively targeted.

I genuinely think that it is now or never to go for this as I dont think the Europa will exist in 10 years. I reckon an expanded CL will take its place and if that happens then our chances of winning against the richest clubs in Europe is very low.

I think in recent games we've witnessed Ronny has learned from past mistakes and has been willing to change things around if the situation calls for it. Maybe still has some way to go, but it's promising to see progress in this respect.

Nope.Wouldnt bet my life against it though.

If i was a betting man, which i am, id say maybe 10-20/1 for it to happen in my lifetime and maybe 50-100/1 under Deila.

I think we have a pretty good chance of doing it.

I believe in the new strategy oof keeping players as long as possible to gain consistence in the team. Better consistency=better results=more attractive players=higher prices when we sell. So it is a win-win strategy.

I am not worried about our tactics. What matters in away games in Europe is a tight defence, and we have hardly been conceding at all since our defence settled.

We could be creating more chances but we have a young top 4 so there is huge room for improvement there if we keep hold of our players and keep working at it.

In 2 or 3 years time we could be better than these dutch and belgian teams and at least as good as the mid-level EPL teams and then we will be real contenders for EL glory.

No it is Deila's actually I was too lazy to add the apostrophe.

I agree and I was very encouraged by his tactical tweak at Pittodrie. I still think that the big dogs will eat us for breakfast especially if we continue to use our full backs in the same way against these teams. However I still think he has a lot to learn regarding how to box smart and we may end up on the wrong end of a few skelpings.

    Nice edit!

Well, I guess we'll find out soon enough where we stand Europe-wise. I'm hopeful & foresee good things.

    Probably not

But, I think they could get to the CL knock outs with Deila at the helm

Whoaaa there, just take a breath son.

Deila is still a developing manager with fresh ideas and a fantastic personality but in regards of comparing his intelligence with that of the requirements to navigate, a minnow in spending terms, through to a final... is a non starter.

Let's look at his attempt at winning a treble, or any managers attempt at doing this. Domestically it's far easier to achieve a treble than getting to a Euro final never mind winning it yet we have consistently struggled to achieve that.

Deila admitted he felt the weight of ambition rest upon his shoulders tail end of last year and began to doubt himself. You speak of game intelligence, yet the man had been launched in the deep end with sharks with his jump from relative non existence to a club with serious history and stature and failed from the offset to transition a previous regime towards his own taste.

Instead he took a carte blanche approach causing a complete culture shock within the squad, - tactics, mentality, diet & fitness. A total clean sweep which could have cost him his job.

Easy to look at the man now and say nah.. but at the time there was severe pressure and doubt coming from fans, media and admittedly himself. Unsure how the board handled him behind closed doors.

Going back to the main point of achieving Euro success. There are more factors than just requiring spending or player retention through an increased wage structure.

There's the pure element of its just football. You can get pumped unjustly, like our treble this year. Ref bias, bigger team bias. Ref incompetence with the need of video evidence to ensure equality. Cast your mind back.. Juventus ring a bell? Porto's antics...

Then there is Deila, still developing himself. A man required to develop players to Euro class without them leaving too early to year on year bring in more to develop the squad as a whole.

Get the jist here? Time and commitment. We allow none and nor do ambitious players. What if Deila develops closse to a CL 1/4 or Euro semi/final over 4 years. Will he stay if poached by a club with vast amounts of money.

The summary of this is we are still a big fish in a wee pond with no structure to allow long term player and manager development to the point of building a squad to reach a final. It would require 5-6 years with Deila and 5-6 years of investing in player wages to commit to Scotland, this is not going to happen. We are already losing Virgil Van Dijk, the writing is on the wall.

To be honest I don't think Deila's strength is in the tactical part of the game, it's his full approach of improving players and taking them to as good as they can get that is his strength.

Tactically he still has a long way to go though.

I reckon we potentially could have a great European away win with Ronny. We could take the game to a team and catch them off guard. As for the consistency needed to have a good CL run, I reckon we are in for a few harsh lessons over the 6 games if we qualify. This is not meant to be a put down but it is how I see it. As long as we learn lessons then it is a means to an end. I am still annoyed that Lennon left, i felt that he had built up a good whack of experience in this regard. Ronny is inexperienced and I feel that this will show next year.
