Yeah but there's a very big difference between what Porto are doing and what we are doing. We aim to buy players for less than £2million and ship them on for £10million. Porto buy players for between £5-10million and ship them on for anything between £10-40million. They are doing what we should be aiming to do. As long as we keep buying strikers from the bargain basement bin we will win nothing in Europe.

I would love to be proved wrong but I doubt it. Maybe we have a chance in the Europa League but thats about it.

Probably win a few Champions League trophies and maybe a couple Europa League... We're talking on Football Manager, right?

Of course we can, Dnipro are in the europa final, surely we can be as good as them? Sevilla could win it for the fourth time in 10 years, it's not as if they're spending mega money.

Ronny has the ability to manage a champions league winning team. Yes.

That's not what he has got though. As long as Celtic are in the shoe string budget SPL it would be nothing short of a miracle.

If we generated the income of any of the top 6 teams in the BPL then yes!

Would love to think so but until we have greater investment in the side I very much doubt it.

    * the BPL. Honestly I would rather never win a European trophy than sell my soul to sky like those soulless entities down there like Spurs, and for what? What the * does all those millions and 100k a week players get Spurs? * all that's what.

    Agreed.

Tbh, I think it would be boring if we had countless millions to splurge on new players every season. There's a certain excitement to having limited funds and having to find hidden gems or players with potential that no one has noticed.

Obviously this means we also get players that don't make the grade, but so be it. Probably in the minority with that opinion.

Soulless is the right word for the EPL.

I don`t care about the Champions League anymore. OK, its important from a cash perspective but it also has clubs from the EPL and the likes of Barca/Real who for me are the epitome of Modern Football. How can a team from Scotland be expected to compete against clubs who can rack up hundreds of millions of debt with seeming impunity ?

We could do something in the Europa League, it not impossible and would still represent a fantastic achievement. But we are far away from even that. And even that tournament has its fat cats - Sevilla, 200 million euros in debt have bought their way to a fourth EL final. I hope Dnipro do them.

Sean D, we clearly are not going to agree with each other, but one thing i will say is that you are right in so much as Spurs have been pants this season. fyi, this is not a lie. The obscene money that they have spent on players who are well below average is quite abhorent. Celtic , also have wasted some on the stikers, so much for the scouting for both clubs. It just seems a bit of a lottery if these foreign players can do it in Scoland or England. One final thought is that both Celtic and Spurs desparartely need striker power to help Griffiths and Kane.

Can they? Yes, if they keep up the level of progression they've already shown.
Will they? I doubt it, because there's a lot of quality even in the EL, any team can beat any other on a given day, and the one reservation I still have about Deila is his apparent lack of (or at least seeming unwillingness to implement) a 'Plan B'.

I believe Celtic are capable of winning a European trophy within the next 5-10 years, hopefully with Deila.

europa league is definitely an achievable target. lesser teams have won it in recent years and it doesnt require huge spending power to progress in it.

it would take a few things to work in our favour. a lucky draw here or there to avoid some of the CL teams that drop in after the group stages, 2nd legs at home so we know exactly what we need to go through.

i think ronny is definitely the type of manager that could help us achieve this. capable of extracting more from a team than the sum of its parts.

i thinking keeping a core of 5/6 players in our starting 11 is a good starting point and we already have a few of these pinned down - brown, gordon, johansen.

add to that a fit lustig, izzy on form and hopefully armstrong settling in more. if we could get a decent cb to stay for a good few years then that could be 6 or 7 players that could really be a tight unit over the next couple of seasons supplemented by some 'luxury' players who may only be here for a season or two.

i think this kind of approach could really see us make progress in europe, potentially a CL quarter or late stages in EL

won't get close if you sell your best players every year
