Even if you don't think so Paul McStay is one of Celtic's and Scotland's best players of the last 30 years

Yes he is a quality player but he's not one of the best players of the last thirty years

In your opinion. In mine McStay is closer to Brown than he is to the likes of Larsson, McNeill and Jinky.

McStay had a better range of passing , better shot and was overall a better player

Again, your opinion. I don't disagree he was technically better but there's a lot more to a successful footballer than being able to pass a ball. Brown is a far better player for Celtic than Crosas, Donati and Ki as recent examples.

My point is McStay isn't the greatest Celt ever, not even close. The stats, for what it's worth in this type of debate, back that up.

How do the stats show he isn't one of the greatest Celtic players. Playing for Celtic 16 years and winning 76 Scotland caps I think that is two stats that clearily he is one the greatest Celts ever

Yes he didn't win much honours in his later career but that is because he was the only quality player in a very mediocre Celtic side

That's not what you asked. You asked, apart from loyalty, what did Paul McStay ever bring to Celtic. I showed you.

And if you really need me to tell you difference between Broony and the Maestro well, there is probably no point in continuing this debate.

Paul McStay was voted into our greatest 11, alongside the likes of Jinky and Larsson, that's good enough for me.

Just a side point here: John Collins was quality.

Collins was actually the better player of the two for a few seasons. McStay was struggling with injuries right enough.

Mid to late 80s though, Collins couldn't lace The Maestro's boots, at any point in his career.

You're proving my point, the one thing that get mentioned more than anything with McStay is loyalty. That doesn't mean he's the greatest ever Celt.

You showed me a mediocre honours list that our current Captain has already surpassed. That and loyalty don't make him the greatest ever Celt. Even attempting to compare him to our European Cup winning Captain is laughable IMO.

I didn't say he wasn't a good player or that fans don't hold him in high regard, as they do. My point is he's not the greatest ever Celt.

You said he wasn't even close, yet he is in the top 11 as voted for by us fans. :smiley-laughing002:

I take greatest Celt as being a combination of loyalty, skill, commitment and rapport with the fans.

McStay ticks all those boxes for me.

McStay certainly deserves to be up there if the likes of Dalglish is up there.

He was voted one of the 3 best central midfielders in a 3-5-2 formation of our best players. Slight difference.

Difference between McStay and Dalglish is Daglish was world class and won more as a Celtic player in less than half the time before winning 3 European Cups elsewhere. Their careers are incomparable.

McStay was world class as well. How much of him did you actually see?

Like I said though, loyalty is a big part of being in the running for best ever Celt. I don't think anyone would say Tommy Burns was a better player than Dalglish but he is infitely a better Celt then him.

I think Dalglish is a bit of a * in all honesty.
