Flares are a complex issue and personally I can see both sides to the argument; I just think it is irrelevant to the debate what that deeply unpleasant organisation running the European game and our joke of a national media make of it.

It seems some need to have a flare as that helps them support the team while the club pays the fine :52:

It should have been us attacking when Van Dijk received his second yellow. It should have been our corner. Another basic error that the officials made tonight. They were absolutely shocking. There was as much contact with Van Dijk's second yellow offence as there was with Armstrong's penalty claim.

That's what I was referring too. All these "little" decisions went Inter's way all night long, and they turned out to be pretty big. How the linesman thought that came off GMS and not Icardi I'll never know.

OC is right though , we would be raging if they got penalties like that. Red card * the game , but I doubt we would have went went through anyways lads inter were well on top before VvD went off , GMS chance is annoying me so much

    .
    Was it?

A bad referee would have been bad for both teams

Come on, let's not start all this * back up again. Anyway, let's not get up on our high horse here either. There's corruption in the Scottish game too (e.g. Farry and Cadete).

There's no evidence he was anything but a * referee.

I don't think they need to. Look at any game where an Italian team play in Europe and sure as * most decisions are going their way. They have this down to a fine art, they strech and bend the rule book to breaking point, use every weapon at their disposal to bluff, pressure the referee into making decision, waste time and drag the other team down. They have been doing it for decades and it has worked.

Huh, I said we should all calm down :icon_mrgreen:

You are right, but the corruption by farry was done for free that's the only difference.

I just think these continental teams, when they go diving and rolling around the pitch as if they're gonna need to get stretchered off then the next minute they're up and bouncing around, it lacks class.

Icardi's a prime example of this, you could see the delight in his face when he went waving the imaginary card at the referee and he walked away delighted.

It was almost as if he'd won a penalty.

It's about time players were given automatic bans for unsportsmanlike behavior that results in a sending off.

If it's a foul it's a foul. You don't see us going up to the referee and waving imaginary cards - we just get on with the game.

Similar challenge goes in in antoerh area of the pitch it's just a free-kick or they play on.

Make no mistake about it, Inter Milan were shaken after the first leg and it's clear this is a tactic Inter Milan had in their minds. It's their in almost every game they play.

It's a conman trick and Mancini was obviously delighted when his tactic paid off.

It was all change in the tactics, sending on pieces of paper and redirecting the shape of their team. So he'll be quite happily smug about winning through in such a * way.

I saw a similar thing last night with the Barca game with Gael Clichy. Alves goes down like he needs treatment for a serious injury. His manager subs him off and the next thing he's storming up the tunnel kicking water bottles even though he's supposed to be injured.

This is the difference between a manager who's got a bit of class and subs the guy for faking an injury and getting a fellow pro sent off and a manager who's so desperate for a win he's quite happy when the game gets totally spoiled.

If ye can't win the game fairly, win at all costs. If that means diving around and flashing imaginary cards the free-kick should be reversed and the waver being yellow carded. It's the same as diving.

It's basically like saying, all you other players can go in for a tackle, but you can't because you're already on a yellow card. It spoils the game.

What are you supposed to do if you get a yellow card, stop tackling players when the ball is their to be won and the player doesn't have control of the ball?

It's a shame and it's about time something was done about it. The referee reacted to all the players, not just Icardi, to tell the referee what to do and the referee seemed to stall on it and then got the card out after speaking to his officials who were also * terrible.

A big game like this and we can't have top referees officiating the game trying to help keep the game alive. Keep the game interesting.

It's easy for the striker, he can go into the challenge being all physical and then just fall over. Icardi was running backwards and just basically fell over because he lost his balance. Palacio turned as if he had the ball, but he didn't actually have it.

If he takes a touch and then takes it past the player fair enough, but if the defender is goal side and tackles goal side it's not a tackle from behind. It's not a two footed tackle, he's actually made a brilliant tackle and that's as much of a footballing craft as scoring goals is.

The ref in the first leg was a million miles away from this shower of muppets all trumped up on having a day out at the San Siro, make sure you don't make a controversial decision against an Italian team. You might not get to referee another game in Europe if you screw that one up.

It's cute because the referee's circle would all gather round and say they were both yellow card offences, but a big guy like Icardi had no reason to start running backwards and go down in installments and then go lobbying the referee as if someone's just tried to break someone's legs.

So once again in Italy, poor sportsmanship wins through again. The higher the price tag for a player, the better they are at getting players sent off. This way they don't have to win the hard way.

It's like i said weeks ago, Inter are a great team - playing against ten men. This was always gonna be the problem with this tie. The sooner they bring in video officials the better because the officials on the pitch can't be relied on and their is absolutely no consistency between the excellent refereeing team we had in the first leg and the one we had tonight.

The ref couldn't keep up with the play and from time to time somehow got in the way of the play when we're trying to work the ball through midfield. He'd have been as well firing on an Inter strip and playing defensive midfield.

We were the better team over 2 legs imo, the first leg should have been a home win but for 2 critical mistakes from the big man, who was absolutely superb tonight might I add.

If VVD had not been sent off it may have ended up differently, but we can go out with out heads held high, on paper they should be beating our team but we put up a great fight vs 12 men.

I have a good feeling about next season's European adventure.

    Hail Hail.

Aye he was always in the road wasn't he?
I was dead against video referees as it will slow the pace of games. But i've came around to the idea of it being mandatory before every penalty or red card decision. There is just to much at stake from a penalty or sending off that can totally ruin the game.

I can see where you guys are coming from but I can't really buy this narrative. It's not like Italian teams are unique in trying to gain an unfair advantage. There are just cultural differences in what ways are and aren't acceptable of going about this. We all quite rightly love Broony for his unique brand of psychological warfare and ask yourself what Italian fans would think of thugs like Lasley or Elbows.

The problem is 2-fold IMO. Firstly referees are scared to make a bad decision that costs UEFA a lot of money, so when in doubt (and remember that bad referees will be clueless much of the time) they will tend to go with the safe option: give the benefit of the doubt to the team from the country with the bigger TV market. Secondly, as S'escosès pointed out, our ways of gaining an advantage are penalised in Europe far more often than the ways that are common in Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc.
