Celtic Park will host the opening ceremony for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the first time the games, with representatives from countries with over 30% of the world's population, have visited the city.

As Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II (she is Queen Elizabeth II of England and Queen Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom, but prefers not to use her United Kingdom title) is expected to open the games, and will no doubt be looking forward to participating in the unique Celtic Park atmosphere.

Her Majesty’s association with Celtic goes back to the Coronation Cup, won by the club in 1953 and immortalised in song. I am sure Palace officials will be busy arranging a suitable acknowledgement of that triumph at the opening ceremony. Celtic Park will be the only venue the Queen visits during the games.

Since there alot of fans who 'hate' the Queen how do you all feel about her trotting around in our hallowed ground.

    Your opinions in here.......

Couldn't give a * i'm a Celtic supporter born in Scotland which happens to be part of Britain a lot of narrow minded will need to get over it. She may be a symbol for the other side to herald but let's be bigger than they would about this and let it lie.

I don't hate the queen,. I don't know her. I don't agree with a monarchy in England 'ruling' Scotland, therefore I hate what she stands for.
Nothing to do with being a Celtic supporter, more to do with being a republican.

    Good point.

But hope foreign viewers dont look at this and associate it with a British city hosting the games rather than a Scottish.

Most folk probably will probably think we're part of England anyway.

Maybe a few years ago yes, but Glasgow's name and reputation has really grown big time in recent years and most people around the world now know we are a Scottish city (and by far Scotland's best city at that!) :50:

I'm a Republican at heart but the Queen has always done a decent job representing the country. Not bothered at all about her being there.

More bothered about Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth "like the Olympics but without the best athletes" Games!

I was at the opening ceremony years ago of the Special Olympics at Celtic Park, the Queen was not there, but there was still an anthem.

To be honest I couldn't give two hoots, let them get on with it.

I hope the games will further raise the profile of Glasgow, as they did for Manchester which I really doubted beforehand. Improve transfer links for us (underground extension I believe), make Celtic Park known to an even wider audience and possible even lead to a stadium extension.

Personally for me the Queen is a very real symbol of all the evil that england has inflicted on us and around the world. Just because someone holds a certain position to my mind doesn't mean they automatically deserve respect. I have no repect for such an evil institution as the english monarchy nor it's current head but I really don't care one iota she will be opening those games.
