Because we have a moronic notion of how to develop football talent in this country, that's why we don't produce great players in Scotland anymore. There's really no reason why we can't develop world-class Scottish players, we have done in the past.

Ironically it's precisely this ideology of some people being intrinsically more talented than others that gets in our way. We try to find the "talented ones" and then give them the "best coaches"; instead we should be providing free basic facilities to children and teens so that a *-ton of kids get a *-ton of playing time as used to happen on the streets.

Luckily with business we aren't so stupid and Scotland therefore still produces plenty of skilled businessmen such as yourself.

Last I heard was the consultation process for all permanent staff (so everyone bar those matchday staff) with a view to taking it up to the living wage. A step in the right direction. Nothing anti or for I have read since.

Lawwell did make a comment touching on the irony that most of the staff affected were in the retail sector for Celtic - direct competitor?

    Sports Direct.

    You couldn't make it up.

As usual , those who matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter.

Those fans who attend Celtic Park regularly and use the facilities don't seem to have any problem .
Those who live far away and rarely if ever get to Celtic Park , have used the living wage as a stick to beat the club with .

Do you hear many people discussing the minimum wage in and around Celtic Park . Have the fans at any match , held any protest ?

Is that not proving my point . I am not disrespecting any fan but it is the fans who live closer and attend more regular that puts the most into the club. I know all fans are equal but money talks and Celtic would prefer not to annoy local fans more than casual attenders .
The biggest problem I think is zero hours and I wonder what Celtic's stance is on zero contract hours .

I think what really bothers me about this situation is that it could easily be remedied if the highest earners at the club (the playing staff and maybe two of the suits) took it upon themselves to step up and lend a hand.

The article at the start of this thread reckons that the cost of applying the living wage to the staff currently on minimum wage would be around £20,000 per year.

Even if we take that estimation up to £50,000 per year, if the first team players and Lawwell and Bankier each gave up around £1,600 each per year the money would be there to pay the living wage.

£1,600 per year from guys who are in many cases making the kind of money in a week that many of those on minimum wage will be lucky to see in a year.

    Mental.

No it's not proving your point at all. The bit about Celtic not wanting to annoy those attending games is pretty ridiculous as well.

The local fans bit is a nonsense as well. There are plenty of Celtic fans that live 100's of miles from Glasgow and attend far more games than many Celtic fans that live in Glasgow.

    Celtic and the living wage

Why is it " not in the interests of the business or the club"
    Just wondering.

I could be wrong, but the feeling I got is that they seem uncomfortable with the notion that the living wage can fluctuate, meaning they "they lose control of cost base", as Bankier put it this morning.

The living wage is dictated outwith the club, if it raises the living wage people get is raised, so they can get 'unexpected' hikes.

I personally think the club are wrong not to pay staff the living wage. It's about image and being seen to be a progressive employer with a social conscience.

Ah but I keep reading on here that people don't care how we are portrayed in the media, so why would that matter.
