Most 'normal' people. You're trying to make it disparaging for people identifying with the country they originated from, that's not right in my opinion.

I've said this a lot but nobody would have any qualms about identifying with other countries if the Irish had a different colour of skin to ours. There's none of this * when it's a Pakistani family, with children grown up in Scotland. Infact, most of the knuckledraggers certainly don't call them Scottish either.

So is everybody who grew up in Crimea now Russian? Or are they still Ukrainian?

What do you guys decide, since you seem to be deciding other peoples national identitities?

Yes and No. All borders are the creation of man, and are hence imaginary lines. Nothing natural says "this" is Scotland and "that" is England. Sadly we define our lives by these stupid lines.

When choosing between a British or Irish passport McGeady choose Irish. Hard to disagree with his choice

This is not about who he is playing for.
Its about a player turning his back on where he was born and bred and end up trying to knock the country of his birth out of competition.

If we had just played china and he had gone and played for them against us i would have the same opinion.
As a Scotsman you can't expect me to support us losing good players to other country's even if its the players choices.

I only used normal in the context below and did not mean it as a insult.

    normal:usual; regular; common; typical.

I can quite happily support that, I'd much rather he played for Scotland, however what I won't support is attacking him for identifying with his roots and his family from generations past. National identity is a complex issue, one that due to my upbringing I know quite well.

But you grew up in Britain. Do you get what I'm getting at here? You nationally identify yourself as Scottish, that is your national identity, nobody has any right to impose on you any differently.

Yes i know what you are saying but im not saying he has not got the right to play for who ever he likes. im saying as a person who was born and raised in Scotland i don't like it or agree with it.

So it is about who he's playing for ? :smiley-laughing002:

Mate look, I know where you're coming from. McGeady grew up in Scotland and has a Glasgow accent. However, you, me nor anybody else has any right to say what nationality the guy is.

Aiden's father's parents are Irish. Would you have any problem with Aiden's father claiming to be Irish if both (I think) of his parents are Irish born and bred and all that goes with it?

If he played for Scotland, could I not then claim that he has turned his back on where his roots lie, his family's heritage?

The fact is that I couldn't criticize him for that. He was born and bred in Scotland and so who am I to tell him he should play for Ireland?

He chose Ireland and good luck to him..

    His choice....

Because of West of Scotland bitterness and the fact he played for Celtic has made him more of a hate figure.. Can't believe fellow Celtic fans can't see this..

I am a bit sore about Maloney playing for Scotland with such an Irish name. We could also have had Mulgrew but I would let you have Hanley:icon_mrgreen:

For the purposes of international football you have to draw a line somewhere though, right?

Or should we be able to see the likes of Zlatan say "hold on, I know I was born in Sweden, but the actual country of Sweden is imaginary and man-made. I want to play for Spain or Germany instead"?

There are rules in place, and McGeady is simply playing by those rules. It has * all to do with how many summers he spent somewhere as a kid. I spent plenty of time as a kid in Canada, but that doesn't make me a Canadian, no matter how much I try to adopt the accent!
