Deila did, we had him on an extended trial, he signed when Deila actually came in. We held on so the manager would give him the ok.

You sure mate? I always thought he had officially signed before Ronny was in the door.

But Deila would probably hardly have knew anything about Gordon, so wether he gave it the thumbs up or not he would have mainly been trusting Stevie Woods, other scouts/coaches, Lawwell and whoever who have basically said he's a good keeper who we should sign because Forster will be leaving.

Deila wouldnt have walked in the door and went "sign me a keeper, get that boy Gordon whos on trial"

Nah mate, we held out for Ronny signing.

We had him working with Stevie Woods for about a month or something though, Ronny signed 6th June.

    Gordon signed 3rd July.

We took Gordon on trial in June, and he signed with us in July, making his debut on the 19th.

Deila signed for us on June 6th.

He was the most expensive keeper in the UK and a renowned International mate, would be shocking football knowledge if he didn't know him.

Do you honestly think it's that much of a stretch for coach's not to have a lot of input into transfer policy? Clubs all over Europe employ people to buy players and others to train them.

    It does happen.

Well the model isn't working. We would have netted more qualifying for the CL than we will from punting VVD.

Does it not make sense to build for now rather than risk it all in the hope of unearthing a gem with the rise in CL revenue ?

Still a norweigan player/young manager would have had barely any knowledge of him, think of all the keepers in Serie A, how many could you name? who's the keepr of Udinese... I dont know you probably don't either but for all we know he could be a very good bosnian who they paid a record amount for off a Bosnian team.

Gordon was very well known in Scotland and probably well known in England after making the move but the vast majority of other European wouldnt have had a clue.

I actually mind talking to German fans last year in Germany who knew none of our players and I said Forster was probably our best player a keeper in the England squad and out 5 Germans all football fans they had never heard of him I even pointed out he had a German name to them lol

But to be fair Gordon signed on the 7th day we returned to training, given we probably opened talks a day or two before that, Ronny may only have seen him training 1-3 times before he was signed.

Oh I agree the model is bullshit but the board and Lawell obviously believe they can make money off the players and still have a decent chance of getting into CL instead of investing in the squad and making sure we get into the CL.

It is a balancing act we can't spend stupid money and can't afford big wages unless Dermot dips into his piggy bank. But we are definitely under spending, probably due to the fact we have bought so many duds in the last 4 years that we are still paying for.

    This.

I find it really hard to get my head around the fact that a scouting system that's identified relatively high quality signings in pretty much every other area of the pitch, seemingly can't spot a decent striker.

Impossible to know though, for all we know they have identified numerous good strikers but they have either knocked us back or cost too much or were just not interested in coming here.

It's much tougher to find quality striker than quality GK/defender/midfielder for amount of money we usually spend (max. 2,5 mil.).

I know this is risky (for our budget/player can actually fail no matter how paid he's been), but our board should wise up and actually spend 4-5 mil. on a quality striker. I'm actually sick of watching players like Pukki or Balde, or players who can't crack it in Europe.

I don't think we need to spend mad money to build a better squad. For the money we have spent on Ciftci, Allan, GMS & Armstrong, we could have trawled the Polish league, Bulgarian league etc and got players of the same ability for a lower fee and lower wages. These signings, particularly Allan & Ciftci stink of laziness to me. There are leagues out there with even worse finances than our own that will be full of decent players who would jump at the chance of earning half what some of the dross we currently employ earn.

Think we need to invest more in a better scouting network & a higher standard of coaches. We always seem to look less comfortable on the ball than all these teams with minuscule budgets compared to our own.

It is so much of a stretch to imagine that managers, scouts and Lawell all have a say in signing players? I think ultimately, it would only make sense for the manager to have the final say, but I'm sure there's loads of people happy to put some input into the decision.

The buck for good and bad signings stops with the manager imo.

You would think they would all have a say in 19/20 signings.

There will be players ie Berget that will solely be the managers choice. The other 95% you would expect scouts to flag them up, Ronny to then watch them, then the board to do some research before deciding if they are worth the cash risk.

I personally think we have been guilty of buying to please the fans. Risking it without the proper scouting being done to appease the pressure when little activity has taken place.

Balde, Pukki, Scepovic.... how many times could they possibly have been watched, then deemed a high enough calibre to do us a turn ?

Hard to disagree there mate, Ronny did say he wants to sign more young Scottish players but that's not what we need right now, need to focus on quality and experience.
