Aye, watching him on the ball and his defending I was thinking this guys utter pish, googled and seen he plays for Oostende who are a kind of middle of the road Belgian team.

You wonder why he was even there in the squad unless they had a good few players injured.

Completely agree with you on the second goal, I actually had the same argument with a guy last night. The defender marking Kanu has just got to stand up behind him and Kanu can't score, but instead tries to be smart and read the pass and gets totally done.

For the third goal though, Denayer's positioning was shocking. You can't defend a cross coming into your box whilst being that far outside the front post. If he's back in line with the post then a) it's a far more difficult cross to put into the box and b) it's a far more difficult header because it would be contested.

Van Dijk is a much better player, that much has become clear.

Had an absolute stinker last night, not the worst for the Belgiums though. Still young and inexperienced. Mad to think he's getting in the Belgium squad and Virgil was miles ahead of him a few years ago and didn't get near the Holland squad.

I think Virgil and Denayer were a well balanced partnership, but Denayer took a while to settle in anyway.

Thought he done ok considering the Belgian defence was flung together for such an important stage. Competed with Robson-Kanu most of the 1st half, had a couple of one on one situations with Bale on the counter and used the ball pretty well.

The Belgian team fell apart at set-pieces, first half inparticular. Denayer was getting a bit of stick for the Williams equaliser, when essentially all he did was try to prevent him from scoring. Denayer was marking Chester on the goal and upon seeing Williams free, he left the man he was marking and attempted to defend the situation. He could easily have stood next to Chester and done nothing.

2nd goal, you could argue he should have held his position but he tried to anticipate the situation and read it wrong. However at the time it was scramble mode in the Belgian area. 3rd goal if we're being critical, he was only slightly too far over covering the front post. It was less influential in the goal than the part of Alderweirald who reacted late to a run by Vokes across him.

Belgians problems last night and over the tournament have been the Wales strengths.

FFS he is a young player who was part of an overhaul bad Defense last night, and wasn't even the worst part of it, and People are more intent on slagging him because they believe a snippet of an interview for turkish media that was taken by a British paper and we are to assume they translated it and didn't take it out of context

He didnt know there would be a cross though you only know that in hindsight, if he was 5 yards further back which would have been better to head it away, then instead of the guy crossing, the guy would have slipped the ball into that space along the ground and Vokes could have ran into it for a shot at the front post.

And people would have been saying "why was Denayer standing back there leaving space at the front post".

Standing where he was was the right positioning to insure that nobody could have ran in there to shoot, usually a midfielder would probably be doing that though or your full-back if the winger was on the guy crossing but they were caught out at the time.

He was poor last night. I don't think he's as good a player as he was made out to be up here. Definitely good enough for Celtic but he won't go on to be a Vincent Kompany or anywhere near that standard.

    He's 21....

Plenty of time to improve, can't write him off that soon going by one game.

Denayer will be a big player. He is still young and he was exceptional for us. Some decent players move to Turkey and it is not for them.:50:

Don't get me wrong I thought he was pish last night but there has been a complete overreaction right across the internet(mostly involving our fanbase) regarding his performance. Loads of folk coming out and only now saying he isn't the player we thought he was etc. Perhaps stemming from some bitterness regarding his comments the other week..who knows.

It was one bad game and the other's around him didn't help at all. Still has potential. As I said before though, his build could * him unless he learns how to use it to his advantage. 6ft is hardly tiny but he looks smaller than that on the park and bigger built guys like RK will give him trouble.

He didn't have a great game but what everyone seems to be forgetting is he's a right sided CB that was made to play on the left of an unfamiliar CB pairing. He also had a * poor left back (I've never seen that Lukaku before, I don't even know if he is a left back or was also getting played out of position) he had to cover for too often and was getting dragged out of position because of it. Yes there were things he could, and probably should, have done better but he hasn't suddeny just become *.

Aye Lukaku's wee brother is horrendous.

For all the talk of Belgium's golden generation they are seriously lacking in full back areas.

His marking at set pieces was atrocious. You can't blame that on anyone else, that's on Denayer.

He'll do well for a club that plays at a level that allows him to have time on the ball and do the things he's good at. At the very top level he won't make it.

Were they marking though? Looked zonal to me, but the whole defence was set up so poorly it was hard to say. If he was meant to be man marking then fair enough, your point stands, but if it was zonal and he's doing what he's been told to do, that's the manager's fault, not his.
