Craig Gordon - hasn't played for two years, Scottish goalkeeper and a bit of a has been (or could-have-been more like) - would RD have come in and immediately identified him as a target? I don't think so

Berget - Probably, albeit a pretty uninspiring signing

Tonev - a target under Lennon, is it likely that RD who plays a system that could not be farther from Lennon happens to identify the exact same player? I don't think so.

Who is really pulling the strings?

Does Peter Lawwell's 'Unseen * Hand' stretch right down to the team sheet?

Is Tonev not a winger though? Exactly what Ronny wants.

I would imagine it would be a bit of both. Ronny will identify the positions that need strengthening and the club will be working off the same database we've always had.

Gordon was probably a club decision though.

I reckon what we have now is a 'coach' who will work with the players he has/is given. I don't think there will be much say in who comes - and certainly not in who goes.

You've got to think Berget was his signing.

I really don't think he is just going to get handed players and be expected to make it work, he will have input.

It's all through the scouting system. Deila doesn't seem the type to bring in his own players.

Agreed. The Logic is surely for the Manager, coaches, scouts to identify the players they want. The rest is up to Lawell to negotiate and buy.

That's pretty much what he's had to work with so far though, isn't it? Here's a group of players the last manager left behind of which probably only a handful would be in any way suitable for your style of play, do something.

This concerns me the most, I remember Mowbray wanting two new cb and ended up with Robbie Keane.
The manager / coach should be selecting targets in particular players that already have quality and experience. John Park can work on the New Project type players.

I'm not disputing the snail like pace with which we do business in the transfer market.

Tonev all around attacking mid. very fast, good technique, left footed, tries long range shots, lacks composure. watched some Villans games. not impressive.

Is it snail pace or non existent though? A couple of potential loans and a free goalie isn't backing Deila and I cant believe that its him saying go out and get me the cheapest options possible.

Ronny even said it himself. He wants certain players, positions etc and the scouting team go and identify them. Thats why you have a scouting team. Why would our new manager have enough time to fly all over the globe looking for players instead of managing the team?

Once players are identified, they are brought back and he ok's them. Lawell then sanctions the move depending on price tag etc.

Well, factually, it's not non existent is it? :smiley-laughing002:

Look, I'm not happy with how we are (not) doing business this transfer window but that's not really what the thread was about.

It was more than likely John Park and his scouting system that recommend Tonev last year, and again this year. Same with Craig Gordon. Berget might have been on our lists and because Deila has worked with him and likes him, that's why we made a move. Safe to say most players that have came into the club in the past 4/5 years have been down to John Park and his staff.

I think we were always going to bring a keeper in anyway thinking back to Kamenar etc

Wouldn't be surprised if the deal to bring in Gordon wasn't a few months in the making.

It's quite simple and has been explained many times:

    • Manager decides what type of players he wants/needs.
    • Scouting provides a list of players tailored around what the manager needs.
    • CEO does the negotiating on transfer fees and wages.

There are obviously deals, like the Berget one, that we do outside of this model. Who are purely based on the managers knowledge - Kelvin Wilson was another one of these signings.

I am here to help Celtic get better. I know the interest of the club is the same as mine. We are working together. I say what I am looking for, and [the scouting department] get up the options. Then we go from the list, from the top, and see who it is possible to get in. But I also know what categories we are talking about in terms of salaries and fees. They are doing a good job.”

This is from the man himself....he tells them what he wants and then they work as a team to get it done.
Time to put the board pick the players crap to bed.
