It's because the game got discounted as a forfeit though, that has something to do with it.

I actually agree for once that Pukki is more suited to the lone role. I think because of his build and work rate he would maybe be better at holding the ball up when we need it.

However he hasn't played in the last few games so I went for Stokes, who played well at the weekend in fairness. We all know he cannot play up top alone, and isn't always that effective outside of the domestic competitions, but until we get a new striker it will no doubt be him that starts. By playing Berget as well the two of them could also alternate between the two positions, Berget's general movement seems good and Stokes is quite happy to drop further back during the game.

I actually don't think the team will be changed much in terms of the players out there, I pray Ronny realises that the 3 in midfield is needed though. It's ok being attacking but the main thing from this first leg is that we come back to Glasgow still in the tie, sometimes the philosophy will have to be altered a bit to get the right result, as I'm sure he must be aware.

In the last few years Maribor's revenue has been on the avarage around €9M per year (cca £7,2M), of which the club usually spends around €8M (£6,4M). The expenditure is for everything concerning the club and not only wages which were just over €3,2M (£2,6M) during 2013, although I am uncertain if this is salaries alone or bonuses as well (probably without). The income is heavily dependent on Uefa earnings and transfers. Only around €1,5M is gathered from sponsorship deals and around €1M from tickets, tv rights, merchandise etc.

The top salaries are around €200,000 (£160,000) gross per year or around €17,000 (£13,600) per month. I believe Tavares is the highest paid player with his yearly wage just over that number. Players like Ibraimi, Vršič and Šuler likely get somewhere similar to that number, while the goalie by many accounts gets €11,000 (£8,800) per month. I doubt anyone else gets more than €100,000 (£80,000) per year, though, I am certain that couple of other important players for the team do get around €75,000 (£60,000).

On top of their salaries, because the club has had some success in Uefa competitions in recent seasons, the players also enjoy bonuses for their performances. I reckon with all of this combined the highest paid player in Maribor currently gets around €250,000 (£200,000) per year.

By all accounts Maribor overachieves with the resources they have. Give them the Celtic budget and you get a CL quarter-final contender every season :35: :smiley-laughing002:

    Stokes

Think this is too big a game for young Denayer. He had a great debut on Saturday but remember is still only 19 and still looks a bit raw (ergh). Experience is needed in a game like this IMO. Ambrose is a good player and has performed well for us many times in Europe before, one half bad game does not make him *.

I don't want Mulgrew anywhere near the midfield for this because he's a disaster in there. Strolling around easily in Scotland does not cover up the fact that he is * poor in Europe. 3 midfielders will be needed though which means an attacking player has to be sacrificed. For me this player should be Commons. We'll need energy from middle to front and he won't offer much of that. Stick Berget in there instead and see what he can do. His strength and physical presence will be vital I think, he offers good passing, nice link up play and seems quite intelligent. Also, as we all know Stokes forgets he's a striker sometimes and likes to drop deep and out wide which leaves massive gaps up top everywhere. I noticed on the weekend that Berget likes to drift around and vacate those very spaces. This will not only help Stokes but the team too on the night. Plus he can actually head a ball. He's an asset.

For me this is Stokes' last chance to prove himself in Europe to the manager and the majority of Celtic fans. I personally don't think he's able to cut it, because I've been watching him for years. I would actually rather Pukki in there but seeing as he hasn't played for a while his confidence is probably shot again and we all know how a low on confidence Pukki plays. Stokes had a good game on the weekend too so is our best option right now.

If we remain defensively sound, strong in the middle and take our chances up front I can really see us nicking an away win here. Everyone needs to give 100% though on the night. The 2 games vs Legia were embarrassing and it looked like half the team weren't playing for Deila. I'm praying it isn't the same vs Maribor.

Had no idea Tavares earns that much. I thought the highest wage is around 10-12.000 euros per month. At least those were the numbers people usually discussed in forums.

Haven't seen any confirmation on Matthews or Forrest but I'm sure they'll be out for this.

Think the line up will look something like:

    Gordon

    Lustig
    Denayer
    Van Dijk
    Izaguirre

    Mulgrew
    Johansen

    McGregor
    Commons
    Berget

    Stokes

Subs: Zaluska, Ambrose, Biton, Kayal, Boerrigter, Pukki, Griffiths

It would be hard to argue against the starting X1 from Saturday for this one in my opinion.

I think it's quite easy to, you can't treat a game away from home in Europe as the same as an SPFL game at home.

    Keep it tight.

What would you change? Maybe dropping Commons for Kayal perhaps. Put it this way, if I saw the same team on Wednesday, as I did starting on Saturday, I wouldn't be complaining.

Drop Stokes and put in Kayal. We need 3 in midfield away from home in Europe, if we don't have that I won't be happy. It's naive to go away from home in Europe and play so openly, that's fine when we are at home but away from home in Europe is a different story.

I would play Berget up front himself, Stokes will be far more isolate than he was at the weekend.
