    A lot has been said about how the guy only played 4 minutes, but I've a quick question: supposing he had sat on the subs bench for 90 minutes, would they not still be breaking the rules?

    It states "participates in a match" but surely by being naming a suspended player on the bench you're still breaking the rules, in the sense that by being named as a substitute, you're still an active member of the team.

    Supposing they only had 11 players that were not suspended they'd be avoiding a forfeit by naming suspended subs (i.e. for the game to take place do you not have to name at least X number of eligibile subs?).

    Is having him on the bench not just as bad? If him being in the squad at all is illegal by UEFA rules, then the guilt over this is even less, and they'll be chucked out.
