Hey, I posted the same message in the Deila thread, but I fear that it drowned in the sea of comments, so I'll just create a thread, if you don't mind. Anyways, here's the post:

Brilliant signing by Celtic, but as a Strømsgodset supporter, this makes me really sad...

    Background:
Played for Strømsgodset until 2008, when he retired as a player at the age of 32. He then took over as a manager, when Fagermo left the team. During these 6 years, Deila managed to turn a bottom half team of no-namers into a force to reckon with. He won the Norwegian Cup in 2010, finished 2nd in the league in 2012, and won the league in 2013. This was with minimal resources, while constantly losing his best players.

    Personality:
Deila is pretty much the Norwegian Jürgen Klopp. He's young, passionate, has a clear philosophy, expects a lot from his players, and knows how to squeeze out every last drop of talent. No manager in Norway for a really long time has been better than Deila at developing youth. He's constantly had to sell his best players, but he always manages to bounce back. He's not been able to sign any big names either, but that has not stopped him.

Deila's football is all about attack. He wants his defense line to stay high up the pitch, and nothing makes him more angry than when the other team manages to push his team back. He wants to dominate possession and create a shitload of chances. Sometimes his football is very pass-and-move, other times it's more quick and counter-attacking. It all depends on the game. As long as his team is the one setting the tempo and pushing the other team back, it doesn't matter.

Although he is a passionate down-to-earth guy, he's very calm and collected during interviews. He's also surprisingly polite and humble. They will often invite him to the football studios as an expert, because he's a very intelligent guy as well. Most football supporters in Norway seems to have a high opinion on him, even supporters from rival teams.

He generally likes to play 4-3-3, with offensive fullbacks.

    What Celtic can expect:
Attacking football and focus on youth development. There will be no more parking the bus in Champions League under Deila. This is the man who tried to make his players constantly attack when Strømsgodset played Atletico Madrid in the Europa League a couple of years ago. He fears no opponent, and is not willing to sit back.

Seeing as Deila is the type of manager who wants every player to perform as well as possible, I think he'll put most of his focus on Europe. Seeing as Celtic already is pretty much guaranteed to win the league, it will be hard for him to motivate the players like he did when he managed an underdog team like Strømsgodset.

In addition to this, he's got a Mourinho-esque home record! In fact, his team recently got the record for most consecutive home league games without defeat(44 games). This is the same record as the legendary Rosenborg team of the 90s, which is the only Norwegian club in history who could hope to play European football and do a decent job. If Deila can avoid a loss in the next game, then Strømsgodset will break Rosenborg's record.

How does he set his team out when the weather is bad(ice&snow, mud, heavy rain)? It will be common from Autumn to early Spring in Scotland.

I don't think he'll struggle much with that. The beginning and end of the Norwegian league is cold and rainy as well.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the surface, though. Strømsgodset plays on artifical grass, which means that the ball will move very quickly and smoothly, even in rough conditions. It will certainly be an adjustment for a man who demands quick passing.

Then again, Celtic is a significantly stronger team than Strømsgodset. I think he can expect quite a bit from his players, even in bad weather.

This is a trap, I fear. Celtic struggle to pass through teams who defend with most men behind the ball, if the weather is bad. Now I kind of fear wasted points will be common during the bad weather period.

You're * obsessed with the weather. If he can get his team to play attacking football in Drammen the weather in Glasgow wont be an issue

If only we had players like that...hold on! We do. Izzy, Lustig and Matthews will be loving it.

When it comes to pitch conditions: Much like Scotland, Norwegian pitches are only really good for 4-5 months out of the year. One important difference is that in the Norwegian league, around half the teams play on an artificial surface (Strømsgodset included), and the number is steadily growing. This has worked wonders for the technical standard of the league, but it can put Norwegian teams at something of a disadvantage in international competitions. However, knowing Ronny, he'll adapt nicely to this as he has adapted to other changes in the past.

Technique is certainly an important aspect of his football. It's actually a necessity.

I think that one of the reasons for why he likes to play 4-3-3, is because he doesn't want to have one midfielder who's sole purpose is to break the opponent apart and defend. Most of the central midfielders in Strømsgodset have been fairly quick and technical players, like Johansen(though he's especially good).

He likes to have quick wingers who knows how to dribble, but not necessarily on both sides, seeing as he expects his fullbacks to attack as well. Strømsgodset's right winger is an old, technical player with great setpieces as crosses. There's room for different players. As long as there's speed and/or technique involved, it's all good.

The striker should just focus on scoring goals. Deila has used all sorts of strikers. Slow, strong goalgetters and quick tecnical types.

As much as I would love Celtic to be able to control the tempo against the likes of Barca, the smarter thing to do, sadly, is to soak it up and hit them on the attack. I don't want to see us getting steam rolled in the CL of the big guys. Against teams like Ajax, home or away then great, let's compete and try dictate the game. Against Barca, Real etc, it would be suicide.

Well, that's what works best with the weather in Scotland. Norway didn't have a bunch of tall strikers in their NT as a tradition just because someone loved it. They had to cross and punt often because the weather would make passing on the deck a suicide option.

If he is as progressive and tactically astute as claimed, then he will set up accordingly. Mad Wingers posts said he can shift between attacking football to counter attacking.
