I could listen to him talk all day, inspirational. Excellent role model for anyone. Fair play to Celtic for giving Deila a shot, his name came from nowhere. May just become one of our best managers ever.

That's a great video. I've said this before but I don't think he's ever said anything I disagree with, everything I'd want to have in the manager of Celtic.

How good it must be to play for him.

CREATING A WINNING CULTURE
What is a good culture of performance? It is a place where people grow. Collectively and individually.
Being a leader, to me, is divided in two parts. It is:
1. Know your field, which is football to me and
2. Treating people correctly.
If you are good at treating people you create safety, trust and satisfaction. You can’t go to work every day not knowing what’s expected of you, when to meet etc.
You can’t develop if you come to work every day not feeling that your boss, or anybody else, cares about you — not feeling a part of the culture.
You don’t develop if you are nervous in your job, caused by bullying and intimidation.

Look them in their eyes when they come to work, show that I appreciate the people around me. And they should come to training being excited.
We, as a team, should have fun together and care for each other. If there was one factor for the success at Stromsgodset that was it.
HOW TO CREATE THE RIGHT CULTURE
I became a leader as a 32-year-old. From being one of the guys I suddenly had to lead.
Where do I make my stand? How do I want others to perceive me?
The last seven years I have gone for three to four weeks holiday in Brazil after the season ends.
In 2008, I had one goal for that vacation; defining myself and how I would want others to be.
The conclusion: respect, being humble, loyalty and good mood.

I want to be perceived that way.
I guarantee I have sinned along the way; but, hopefully, I get a little bit better every day.
Then I brought these words to the group; ‘these values are important to me, I also want the team to appear this way’.
This is how we should do it. We went through every word. I put them in groups.
We agreed on four value goals.
In Godset, we focus on development. In Godset, we stand together. In Godset, we can discuss a lot internally, but are loyal outwardly. In Godset, we give each other energy through encouragement and positive attitudes.
If something ever happened in the group, I always brought those sentences up to make them remembered by every individual.
After three years I brought them up again.
‘What are our values?’ I asked. Not ONE knew.
I fell to the floor pretending to cry.
‘We work with these things every day and you don’t remember?’
But culture is built over time.
I always had players with bad reputations. But we talk to them about these things and always try to make them reflect.
Nobody knows everything from birth. We experience, reflect and improve. That’s learning.
Some 50 per cent of your work is dedicated to treating people correctly. I think this part is often neglected. It’s equally important to know your field. So many leaders are hired based on their knowledge and their knowledge only.
As leader you also have to handle the personnel well, a fact which is often forgotten.

DEALING WITH DEFEATS
I will tell a story from 2008 when I went from player to coach in Stromsgodset.
It was a team full of routine. A good team. It went really well for the first six months.
In August we were seventh in the league and in the cup quarter-finals. We had beaten Molde 4-0, we beat Brann 2-0 and Viking 2-0.
It went one way — upwards. This could end up amazingly good.
Then we met Ham-Kam, the bottom team, and lost 2-1.
We played really well. We could live with that. These things happen in football.
Then we were up against Stabaek, Norway’s best team at the time, both in the cup and the league.
We lost 3-1 in the cup and 6-0 in the league.
The following week I lost two players. One gets injured and the other is under police investigation for suspected * with a minor.
I did not understand fully what losing those two former players meant to the group.
Anyway, we entered the next match and we lost.
We started to watch for the team behind us, rather than above. I started to feel the pressure. For every loss I would get up one hour earlier in the morning.
I put new demands on the players, through one-to-one conversations, group conversations. We analysed our matches like never before.
We lost our fifth match. I was now up at 6am in the morning.
We were meeting Aalesunds at home in the sixth match.
I put huge demands on the team. The guys worked hard. I told the newspapers; if we are even close to this level in the match we will win 5-0. Now I was cocky, too.
We lost 1-0. It was six losses in a row. In five weeks.
That night, there was no sleep and the next day at work I sat down with the oldest players.
I said: ‘I have done everything. I have prepared food for you. Now it looks like you don’t even run. What is happening? Sit down together and get some answers.’
They left and re-entered a little later. I remember one player told me: ‘Ronny, we have been talking. The training is well prepared, everything is good, but we are mentally exhausted.’
Mentally exhausted? I had been thinking they were unfit. That they had to train like never before because we had only two weeks before we played Rosenborg away.
But they told me: ‘We need shorter sessions, more fun and more time off.’
That was the complete opposite of what I was thinking. I wanted to drive them even harder and forget time off at the weekend.
That evening I had a meeting with Halvard Thoresen, an agent for some players we were trying to sign.

I asked him: ‘Six losses Halvard, what would you do?’
Instantly he replied: ‘I would give them some time off I guess.’
It was like being hit with a brick. I understood. We did not protect them enough.
They are mentally stressed and that’s why they perform so bad.
So I go to my players and raise my hands and say: ‘Boys sorry, I’ve been wrong. I wanted the best for you.
‘You have time off this weekend. Do whatever you want. Get wasted if you like.
‘The one thing I want next Sunday is a team which wants to play football.
‘I want to see a team which fights for each other, then I will be happy no matter what.’
So we did. We did not play well, but the boys ran and we managed a 1-1.
That was the turning point and that has been the biggest lesson for me.
BEING A SOCIAL WORKER TO PLAYERS
At Odd Grenland, as a player, they used to tell us: ‘Guys what happens at home for you has nothing to do with us. When you are here it’s football. Put the other stuff away and focus’.
That was the stupidest thing anyone ever told me. Everything affects you.
If one of my players has a sick mother, if one of my players is having a hard time with his girlfriend, I can’t forget about him developing. No chance!
To give people time off and give them support when they have situations in their life is very important.
What you give, you will get back double-fold. It’s about being seen, being appreciated, feeling important and feeling trusted. It is to see the whole individual. We train human beings, not players.
Never to slaughter, but to educate them is what’s important.
HANDLING SENIOR PROS
You have some players who have been in the game for a while. If you don’t involve them enough you’ll quickly have your worst enemies.
Then negativity flourishes. And a bad culture.
To let other people in gives strength. Ask, involve, include.
You will create a circle of people around you who talk together the same language.

PLAYING WITHOUT FEAR
Many people tell us after games: ‘You play too open. Be more cynical.’
Of course we could do that. But that way we would not win the league. We would win over shorter periods, not over time.
You need faith in what you are doing. Rather than change, you are going through a process.
Therefore it is important to make things harmless. Take away the focus from the worst consequences.
If I walk up to a young player or insecure person and say: ‘If you don’t play well today the bench awaits you next weekend’ the player would think ‘all right, I will enter that pitch and I will not make mistakes today.’
I experienced Roy Hodgson. In 2005, he trained Viking when I was a player.
He was hard. I was glad I was 30.

Everytime I entered the pitch, I thought: ‘Today I must not be seen. Today I will not make mistakes.’
My job was to keep clean. I was anxious before every game. I never looked forward to it.
But you have to be mentally strong as a footballer. In some cultures it is like that; it is hard.
I believe that the best coaches and the best leaders manage to make things harmless.
They show faith and keep calm.
Their hallmark is that they are good people. They care about the people around them.
So I believe that, to make things harmless, take away the fear of consequences, enter the pitch full of energy and do as well as you can.
If we are not good enough then, all right, we lose. But then we must learn from what we did. Next year we will kick them.
I hope when you look at my teams you think ‘wow that’s a team which really enjoys playing football. Who run for each other. What tempo. What intensity.’
The day that is not true any more, my heart dies.
ADDRESSING PLAYERS
I work very much on how I talk to people.

It is easy to feel vulnerable and weak as a leader. Which makes you want to show off your authority.
But it is important to think from the perspective of others. As a leader you have enormous power.
If I stand up here and point to you saying ‘why did you do that?’ you would go into defence mode instantly.
If I had sat down at your level and said ‘what did you think there?’ then I seem interested in what the other person is saying. And I would get a constructive answer.
Talking and being interested in the other person is important. You have to take them seriously. Create equality.
I want our culture to be like that. I want all my players to talk. I cannot create good relations. They must create them together.

CONFLICT WITH PLAYERS
I remember when I started as a manager, I did not look forward to that. But I jumped right into it.
A player openly asked me why he did not start. ‘You did not start today because of this and this and this. Be a bit sharper in training, and you will have possibilities.’
He left and I thought ‘ooof that was a bit strong Ronny. You are hard now. Keep it going. Good leadership.’
If you are part of a business with no conflicts, it should really ring a bell. That is a sign of mediocrity.
It is supposed to be about conflict. I look out for conflicts. I love it. But they must be solved. Each and every one. So people get closer, not further away.
If I say ‘hey, what you did there ... you must be stupid, you are lazy’ you think he will answer ‘yes, I agree Ronny.’ Of course he won’t.
If I say instead ‘hey what you did there…that made me really sad, you made me disappointed.’
I have seen guys with tattoos all the way up to their necks. Even they break at that point because nobody wants to disappoint.
You solve conflicts through honestly telling what you feel, then saying: ‘What do you think about that?’
After solving conflict, I think ‘are we closer? Or further away?’
If closer then, ‘yes’ we have become better.

PRAISING PLAYERS
It is also important not to give too much praise. People get cocky. It feels so good to be praised.
It is important to remember. All of you here are good at something.
I am good at my job. It feels just as good to get ‘Ronny, you are a good person, you make me happy.’
When that happens I cry.
That means much more than someone telling me ‘you are a good manager’.
There are many in Norway who are competent at what they do.
But being a good fellow human being… it would not matter for me to postulate good values if I didn’t live up to them.
If I want my players to be humble I have to be humble.
If I want respect from players I have to show them respect.
And those people who matter to you. Tell them!

Not only was it a great speech for managing a team but its a great speech for managing all business too. We all have at one point had a * boss and if that * boss used ronnys philosophy we would most likely be happier going to work every day.

I have to say this guy gets better with every article i read and every game i see truely has made me and alot of others eat the humblest of pies

Ronny is a role model everyone in Scottish football should look up to. Hopefully he leads major change not just at Celtic but for Scottish football as a whole.

You know, that's exactly how I feel too and is why he is so intriguing.

I'm norwegian but I don't support Godset, but if you are a football lover you appreciate what he achieved during his time there, and his philosophy.

I watched that video right after you signed Ronny and was so inspired, I have since showed it to my wife and watched it 3 more times. Excellent stuff.

Have to say though that the transcript isn't 100% in the DM.

No chance" Can't should obviously be CAN in this sentence. He use some sarcasm and humor that don't really translate that well, or is easily understood from a transcript, but hey ho, well done whoever did it.

Deservedly up for the award. Think Robbie Neilson or McInnes will get it though. McInnes for strolling to second and keeping up with us for so long and Neilson because he's totally turned that club around. Don't think anyone had Hearts winning that league never mind by such a large margin.
