No it doesn't, because getting beat by Morton at home is simply not good enough. So just because we beat Barcelona and reached the last 16, it then becomes acceptable to get pumped out of cup ties at home to teams bottom of the league below us?

Teams now will be redoubling their efforts to dry out their pitches and have secret rugby 7s on them the day before our games.

Sad but very true. Then their cloggers can get about halfing our players as they try to control the ball as it's bobbling about all over the shop.

Then our youth coaches at national level will continue to push the 13 year old who is 3 inches taller than his peers and nothing will ever change.

yes the competitions we enter are ranked in accordance to importance. So league and Europe in the top tier and the domestic cups further on down. Of course I want to see us win every competition we enter every year but I crave another European trophy. The big wan is probably beyond us but a 3rd place finish in the CL and a good cup run and I reckon we have it in us. The way to maintain this and attract better players is to qualify for the CL every season from now on.

You can't separate his managerial career, it's comes in a package.

Fact is a lot of those defeats came when we had bigger fish to fry.

I would fully expect Ronny to take his eye off a domestic trophy if we were in the CL and going well in the league.

Ronny couldn't afford to experiment in the domestic cups this year because he needed good news stories and quick.

He had only 1 way of playing in Europe, defensively. When we came up against teams doing that to us he was found out, badly.

See AC Milan and Juve. Those 2 teams were clever and knew our weakness.

Yeah I think we really need to win the treble this season and get it out of our system. We should be aiming to win it every year of course but next season if we bag it, it will be good to give the younger lads and fringe players a chance to see what they can do in very competitive games. Our season is long and there is piles of games so resting 1st teamers is what we should be looking to do next season. This is far from throwing in the towel. We need to blood youths and these games are perfect.

Agreed. In the League Cup at least. Never really seen the fascination with it myself and Celtic throughout history seems to agree.

Nah, we have more than enough in our squad to be taking care of Morton mate, regardless of what other competitions we are in. Lennon had some embarrassing cup exits, there is no two ways about that. His record in Europe I was happy with, domestic trophies, I was let down. Some of the games we lost were abysmal.

Nonsense. Take the defeat to Ross County....you can take that one out since he was caretaker.

Lost the 2010-2011 LC final to the Huns....not something to be taken lightly as it without doubt helped them and hindered us in the run-in.

Lost the SC semi final to Hearts and the LC final to Kilmarnock. League was wrapped up on administration day and he had no Europe to play in.

Lost the LC semi to St Mirren, League was wrapped up and Europe was still 2 weeks away.

Lost to Morton - relegated from the Championship that season - disgraceful even if you have Champions league the week later.

Lost to Aberdeen, at home, when the league was wrapped up and we had no Europe.

Some of them were embarrassing of course. But what team playing in the CL doesn't have these types of defeats from time to time?

His Hampden record is bizarre though.

A good few of them I was willing to overlook though, especially the early cup defeats when we were fighting on 3 other fronts.

I would rather that treble than the LC. :celt_2:

I would trade them all for a Barcelona, Karagandy, Helsingborg, or Spartak...

Do you remember the good times under Lennon, or is it only the poor matches you recall?

    We can't have it all.

I will forever be happy to trade some domestic cups for modest European success.

It's more exciting and makes us a better prospect to players.

Lennon's record at Hampden is still bizarre.

Shouldn't be a choice tbh, and by that, I'm not saying we should take it for granted that we'd beat Barcelona, obviously. Those unexpected, improbable, 'special' wins are bonuses; we do, however, expect to rack up plenty trophies. I'd rather we gave both cups a serious push, with a target of winning at least one a season, alongside whatever great things we aim for in Europe. You can't win absolutely everything all of the time, but a Celtic manager should be one well accustomed to winning domestic cups.
