Ever hear of a guy called Brian clough apparently he was a decent manager that had let's say some personality issues and was swiftly booted from leeds after initial success with derby. He took that time to reassess himself and then went on to great success with Forest. Keane may not be clough but he brings something special that you cant really explain. A character like keane needs a big club and he has just found one with celtic. The only reason he has not been announced as manager is.out of respect for fai and final contract negotiations. Monday will be announcement day I suspect.

Different time and very different managers, you can't act like that in this day and age with all the power is in the players hands. Back then it was the manager who had all the power.

He has tried to manage with an iron fist before look what happened

The bottom line is next year we could just have a scarecrow in the dugout and we would still win the SPL.

I think the question is what direction do we want to go in. Obviously the money is being cut back. So, I am thinking we need someone with a track record of bringing through young players instead of cheque book managing. I cant think of anyone right now probably because I havent been following football too well recently. Jackie Mac seems good at this sort of thing but he is many years away and his tactics were a car crash in the cup final. I think what we need is a brilliant coach type manager who can do great things with young players. I think a WGS is the kind of manager we need now but obviously not WGS himself.

He was a one-off though. There is only ever going to be one Brian Clough. I dont mind eccentric managers like Clough and WGS. If they are successful and highly entertaining then that is fantastic. However Keane is not like that. He is not some sort of genial clever amusing manager with the golden touch. He is a dour hot head with a poor track record.

No doubt we would get away with just about any warm body in the dugout because of the state of the SPL but we should be looking for someone with some major talent like tactics, youth or whatever. There have got to be managers out there in Europe somewhere if we dont narrow our options. I think a Wim Jansen sort of manager would be good. He was excellent at tactics and made our existing players far better and made some brilliant signings without a high cost. I kind of fancy a Dutch manager for some reason. They tend to be good with youth and tactically savvy.

He done well with Brondby considering he was up against Copenhagen who have dominated over there for the last decade or so. Runners up twice, once by only a point and then he won the double in his last year there. After he left the club has went downhill. Not won a championship since.

Done well with Getafe and although Mallorca were alot better the season before he went there, they did lose a good few of their better players and
were in an absolute mess financially.

I can see where you are coming from but out of all the managers linked he is certainly the one who most excites me and the one who I could see as our manager. Not Roy Keane.

I understand the anti keane sentiment but a club like celtic does not need an owen coyle it needs someone like keane. Most managerial positions end rapidly nowadays so I wouldn't worry too much if you think keane will be a failure because he will be shown the door rather rapidly. I personally think we will not qualify for champions league this year because of the tough draw and I suspect lennon knew that. Keane will be judged over a period of 16 months and then if the anti keane brigade is right he will be booted or have stormed out by then. Like every thing in life time will reveal all. But you have to admit whatever side of the.coin you are on it will be exciting

That is a weird way of looking at it. Yes a tailors dummy could make this team win the SPL. It would be almost impossible not to over the last couple of years leaving only Europe as a way of judging managerial skill, but why take a risk on someone with a bomb scare of a personality and a not very good track record at all. I dont think he would even be on the radar if it wasnt for his Celtic/Irish connections. He is a sort of a Billy Davies level manager and is only being considered because of his connections and high profile. I think we should avoid the whole Celtic man and personality cult type manager angle.

I will say it again. We need a Wim Jansen sort of manager who is very tactically savvy, cool headed, with a great eye for a player and represents the club in a dignified professional way. Someone who gets the job and is low profile rather than a personality manager who is going to be controversial.

People are bringing up Keane's great season with Sunderland in the Championship, and then pointing out how someone like Laudrup's Swansea suffered from "second season syndrome", while also failing to point out the fact Sunderland's second season in the EPL under Keane was an absolute disaster, much worse than that of Laudrup's.

He also struggled to do anything with Ipswich and was eventually sacked. He is also not a manager known for working within a small budget.

But it's fairly obvious why people want Keane. They like the idea that he'll stand up to the media and tell it how it is and use his discipline to get the squad to play out of their skins. He certainly tried that in his previous management roles - it didn't seem to end too well.

Now there is an alternative option...a man who took over a struggling Championship team and then stabilised them to a 15th place finish. The next season, he got them into the playoffs, and they won, gaining promotion to the EPL. Did I also mention that same season they got to the League Cup semi-finals, only losing out on extra time to Spurs? In their first top-flight season for 33 years, they had a memorable first half of the season which included a win over Man Utd. In January, the manager left the club in order to take up the helm at Bolton who were in the relegation places in the EPL. He again stabilised them by helping them to a 14th place finish. The next season, they again finished in a stable 14th place, while also reaching the FA Cup semi-final.

This man's name? Well...none other than Owen Coyle. But I hear people don't want him. No, let's have Keane, they say...

(Obviously I don't want Coyle, but the point I'm trying to make is that Coyle actually has a better managerial record than Keane but people would rather have Keane than Coyle, mainly based on the fact they like an outspoken individual who will tell it like it is rather than a yes-man like Coyle.)

I certainly would prefer Coyle to Keane if we have to go down the Celtic/Irish connection route. Clearly he is a rather more stable character compared to the bucket mouth that Keane is. You are right too that he has shown he can do good things on a limited budget. Problem is there is now a bit of gap in time from his golden spell. I would not be too sad if he was appointed.

I think Celtic fans have got a bit addicted to big personality managers. Its not really important. We need someone who has skills rather than constantly being in the papers.

My feelings on Keane are if Desmond is behind this, he will be given the budget as well, spending it all wisely is another thing going on his past record, but i dont think he can blow it on worse than Bangura and Balde, This might be the first time in years, there maybe big money spent on the team, no way is Desmond putting him here to fail

Then why if we are spending big money give it to Keane. As far as I recall Keane was terrible in the transfer market last time he was given big money. If we are going to have another MON type big spending phase then we need a MON quality of manager.

As i said, if Desmond is appointing him personally, he will be backed to the hilt financially, Keane is then in the position to go over Lawwells head, which Pete wont like, so this could get interesting.

Yeah I would not like that situation. Its OK if Desmond does what he did with MON and injects a load of money and lets the manager do his own signings. However, although I enjoyed Roy Keane's occasional big outing with us like the OF game and maybe a couple of European games, he obviously wasnt fit most of the time and it looked like an exploitative thing to sell shirts. I think it put WGS in an awkward situation. Robbie Keane was a good signing for us and was still a good player at the time but again it was one of those Desmond things wasnt it and spending that money didnt make a lot of sense given the league was gone by then. Again I think that was all about shirt sales. It can sometimes work out good for us but I just in principle dont like the idea of Desmond selecting a player on the basis he will bankroll his wages.

For what its worth - MON was not 'bankrolled' by Dermot Desmond. He was bankrolled through share issues and debt to the bank.

It won't be any different this time and I can't envisage loose purse strings - even if RK is selected.

Desmond seems to have a thing about appointing or buying/loaning high profile fellow Irishmen. It seems more a sort of personal connections and preferences thing for him than an entirely rational way to to spend loads of money. I am not sure I like the way he only spends big money on people that seem to be somehow linked to his circles. What he should do is appoint and manager and give a budget to him based on ability and track record and not interfere.

Share issues always shrink the value of existing shares as it subdivides the ownership further. So, it is kind of a way of agreeing to give away some personal wealth in exchange for more money coming into the club. So, it is a kind of a personal sacrifice of the major shareholders albeit that in the event of it triggering a hugely successful period it may pay for itself in the long run. Problem is when season tickets sell out anyway it leaves the main financial incentive runs in the CL. Obviously for fans we do want to see some of that speculate to accumulate attitude although if it backfires it will make us more skint in a couple of years.

Celtic are a big fish in a small pond, the SPL, and without Sevco the pond is dwindling each day. We need to get out of this league and into a bigger playing platform for the good of the game. I think we need a big name manager who can instill pride back into the players, and get us going in Europe again which Lenny did to some extent, but we need to keep progressing. Roy Keane ticks all the boxes as far as I am concerned. He brought Sunderland up from the bottom of the Championship to the EPL and kept them there, a feat Coyle never quite managed, though he came near to it. That said we can't risk another no mark like Barnes or Mowbray getting the job, so Roy Keane may be the best we will get in all the prevailing circumstances in the game just now.The fact that Keano would sell Celtic season tickets and jerseys will be factored into Desmond's thinking too, MacNamara, Garcia or McKay can't do that. If it is Keano,it might also be prudent to get a No2.in for Roy who is astute in the reading and tactics of the game
