He's a world class defensive midfielder. But he's an absolute garbage central defender. Bombscare in there.

Honestly don't think we will see Messi at the 2018 World Cup

Yes, some of the players you mentioned would be considered world class imo but that isn't important. What is important is that apart from Messi their attacking players were dreadful for pretty much the entire tournament. Its all well and good saying Aguero is a beast on the pitch but he wasn't this tournament, he was horrible as was Higuain. You seem to be talking about some theoretical football match whereas I'm talking about reality.

That is because he isn't a central defender.

Most of the world would struggle to get a regular game with Busquets about. Mascherano isn't a centre back but he has showed he is versatile and can work for the team, as well as playing in his actual role. Showing that he is world class.

But who went out in the groups and who played a key role in a team which made it to the final?

Or people just have some weirdly superhuman definition of world class when their team has just lost.

But yeah, only crappy liabilities win league titles in three different countries.

    Agreed.

I'm guessing maybe because of hamstring problems? Plus the fact he plays in charity games as well.

Hopefully he avoids further injuries and can continue at International level as well.

Fair point noticed him checking that hamstring late in the game tonight, tbh I don't think he has been the same since his injury months back

Not the Messi we know now but it would take him being * smoked for Messi not to be there I'd say, future as a fantastic centre mid.

I think it's good for the game that Germany won tonight. They were the team trying to play an attacking brand of football and they were also a better team than Argentina throughout the tournament.

Argentina did not put in a single performance in this tournament that really made me sit back and go 'wow, they're a good side'. Not one. They showed a lot of resiliency and their ability to defend is admirable but as an attacking force they were pretty pathetic when you consider they have the likes of Messi, Aguero, Di Maria, Higuain and Palacio in their squad. I believe their manager has to carry the can for that and I'm glad a team that played with such a negative mindset throughout the tournament came up short in the end.

Lionel Messi didn't deserve the golden ball either. That was a token gesture. He wasn't even Argentina's best player throughout the tournament, Javier Mascherano was. James Rodriguez was the best player in the tournament in my mind.

Hopefully by the time the next World Cup comes around Argentina will have a more progressive and forward thinking manager in charge and they will be a team worth watching again(which they usually are). Being part of a more attacking side will help Messi to produce his best form as well as increasing his chances of winning a World Cup winners medal and retiring alongside Pele and Maradona as one of the all time greats.

I don't think that is really true.

di María was good at moving the ball from defence to attack. He was one of their best players on the counter attack with his pace. He was also great at taking pressure off the defenders by getting the ball away from them. He was missed I feel as Lavezzi wasn't really able to keep playing in his style for the full game.

Higuaín scored an important goal against Belgium and real should have had another. That goal against Belgium was fantastic, against an equally amazing defence. In the first game I remember him coming on and setting up nicely for Messi. He played a crucial role in stretching the BiH defence. Of course he was going to struggle to live up to the standards people had set him before the tournament had started and all this will be forgotten due to his horrible miss tonight.

Lavezzi had problems the longer the game went on. He started well but then faded out of games. This was very true against the Netherlands. He was still a threat when he was played out on the wing, even if his final ball in wasn't amazing.

Agüero had clearly being struggling with fitness.

Ok, after reflection I'd probably say Mascherano, Zabaleta and Aguero are all definitely world class. Still doesn't make up for the fact they're all level below Germany as an all round team.

See them at it all the time. They change the times or something - just too hard to believe they 'know'.

If anything for Fifa, the perfect ending would have been Messi being a world cup winner.
