There's an ESPN documentary about the 1950 world cup that's worth watching. It's on the US Netflix.

What are you laughing at? Europe is streets ahead!

It's completely unfair that the best players in the World can't make the World Cup because it's 'Nice' to have Mexicos, Cameroons and Japans there.

Tonight, Germany showed the World that Europe is miles ahead in every way.

Ridiculous. Europe gets 14 places, nearly half the teams in the cup. Of course they'll have a couple of teams go far, that's just by the numbers.

Germany is streets ahead. What if Europe only had 6 places like S. America? One of those would certainly have gone to Spain, possibly others could have gone to England, Italy, Portugal... just by the pure number of teams Europe will always have a presence deep in the World Cup.

I bet if Africa (similar number of countries) got more places, a few would surprise. Certainly if they had 14 chances instead of the five they get.

Germany haven't looked streets ahead if you are looking at the tournament as a whole. Aye they * shagged brazil, destroyed, tanked them even. But in the other games there was no real standout side.

Brazil were also ridiculously woeful in that game, those players will never have a worse night in their careers. Their arses just capitulated in the space of 15 mins. Germany barely had to try to score 5 goals.

The world cup wouldn't be what it is if we didn't alllow some diddy sides in.

Aye, very good mate. So if Africa or any other continent out-numbered the European teams, they'd flood the QFs with talent?

    Come on!

How many teams are in South America ffs? America should be one big continent like Europe for starters and that would prevent Honduras and Mexico taking part and getting nowhere every time.

Another thing which does my * in. Separating the nations with continents during the draw. This proves the rankings are just * and mean absolutely nothing.

Could you imagine them doing that in tennis or snooker?

Seriously, get the best 32 teams in that competition as much as possible. Obviously you can't have an all European tournament but make the others play for their place instead of beating * teams to get there.

It's got beyond a joke now.

Just finished watching the first half again. Was pretty surreal from 20 minutes on ward. On first viewing live it truly seemed that Germany would score every time the went forward, but on repeat the Germans seemed to be in shock themselves at how * easily the were passing the ball thru that Brazil team :smiley-laughing002:

Just an incredible collapse from Brazil. One of them games you'll never forget.

Naw sure if you are taking the * or being serious but I agree.

Im sick of Scotland and other smaller European nations never getting in due to facing sterner competition that other continents don't, having to face France or Italy, Holland and the likes, whilst Japan gets to pump teams like Jordan, Oman and Iraq. The United States get * Guatemala and the mighty Antigua, Mexico get Guyana.

Its absolute * that the Americas are divided and play guff teams and get in at a canter.

Aye so you were being serious - good. :smiley-laughing002:

I agree though, its a competition we should have it that the best win, everyone competing against everyone.

There is no need for the division now. I remember reading that the split had been because of poor travel back in the 'old days' for want of a better phrase. It just wouldn't be feasible for all nations (many poor) to travel across the globe, like Australia to Germany and the African nations to Asia etc. Therefore competing against one another to qualify for the tournament made financial sense. However that has changed nowadays (obviously). I just don't understand it.

I mean I had to witness a tournament that never had Sweden and Ibrahimovic - one of the best players on the planet, yet teams with loads of 'spirit' (who are *), like Iran were in it and their qualifying was much easier.

Sounds harsh but its a joke.

The Americas had Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, USA, Costa Rica and Mexico all get through their group. Chile at the expense of the European powerhouse Spain, Costa Rica ahead of England/Italy, same goes for Uruguay, Brazil and Mexico out-shone Croatia and the USA qualified ahead of, you got it, another European side in Portugal.

To say those sides did not deserve to be there or shouldn't be allowed to be there due to the fact Europe is the strongest footballing continent is *. Costa Rica, what many would perceive to be a wee nobody country, took the semi-finalists Holland to penalties and had chances to win it themselves. Mexico almost put the same side out, and we know how the infamous Robben had to act to eliminate them.

Algeria even took Germany to extra time who obliterated Brazil.

Of course some countries are luckier than others, e.g your Japans and Australias of the world, but there'll always be an element of luck in qualifiers. I think the Greek and the Swiss have been quite lucky recently with qualifying groups, though I'm not 100%. The fact is, some European teams simply aren't as good as you'd imagine.

What a bore it would be to have 24 European sides and 8 others.

I don't want a European football fest btw. :smiley-laughing002: I do just believe it is unfair how easy some teams get it, Japan and Australia being my biggest bugs.

I would however think it be fairer if everyone played everyone in the qualifiers and it was a best of the best to play in the biggest and best competition. Maybe eventually this will happen. Suppose other nations have to get stronger before a system like that was implemented.

I don't think its unfair for certain teams to be there per say, but I do believe the system is unfair.
