To be honest, he exploded this year. He's the leading league scorer at the moment with 7 goals. Before that, I thought him being a part of the squad had a lot to do with his last name. But this year he's showing that he has the potential to be a rally good striker, he is always in the right place at the right time, a true poacher.

And I know he's a big Benfica fan, I think he identifies more with Portugal than Slovenia. After all, he was born there and spent most of his life in Portugal. After he scored against Sporting, the media in Slovenia had a field day when the story came out about how he hasn't made up his made on which national team he'd rather represent. But the storm calmed down a bit now and he didn't give a definitive answer to this question. A lot of people were mad at our national coach Katanec for not calling him up to the Slovenia team so that he wouldn't be able to play for anyone else. But he said that he has no plans in ruining the kid's career and that it's up to him to decide who he wants to play for. I think that's fair. And anyway, he's only 18 and it's his first full season in the first team so it's too soon for his full international debut.

Match of the season: Vitória x Benfica, tomorrow. 1 victory away from the 34th league title. Last time Benfica won 2 consecutive league titles was in 1983-1984. Sven-Goran Eriksson the manager.

Great first season for Jonas, 32 games and 28 goals. Signed on a free transfer after being released from Valência.

    Supercup: Benfica

    League: ?

    Cup: Sporting x Braga

    League Cup: Benfica x Marítimo

Considering that the team was torn apart, and knowing how much Porto invested, well done so far, Jorge Jesus.

Luz why did Porto become so dominant in Portugal?? In 1984 you had 26-7 League titles. Since then Porto have won 20-6 Leagues, 11-7 Cups and 2 UCL and 2 ELs. Such a strange turnaround but glad to see Benfica winning the league again.

Thanks for the kind words:50: Apito Dourado. The corruption was strong until less than a decade ago. Even Boavista won a league title and reached the UEFA semis (eliminated by you folks). Apart from that, Pinto da Costa has some qualities as a chairman as well, ofc. But everything is much easier when you win the league with 3-6 games to go every single year by having all the refs in your back pocket. And I can't praise someone who based his strategy in coercion and bribing. After a decade or so of that, even a club like Benfica starts to crumble, pressured by so many insuccesses. Portuguese football nowadays is much more... cleaner. BenficaTV helped with that as well. Part of the decision of rejecting SportTV's offer for a new tv deal was considering them a part of the system. Information / media equals power.

Estádio Nacional(Jamor) is quite cool, worth the visit. Used to go there all the time, when the new Estádio da Luz was being built and Estádio Nacional became our home estadium for a small period of time. A place full of significance for a Celtic fan, ofc.

Mid August... Supercup will be around that time. One week later (15-16) the league starts, so you'll certainly have the chance to watch a game in Estádio da Luz and/or Alvalade.

Sporting will play the qualification to the CL group stage, so maybe you can see that game in Lisbon as well.

Benfica president apparently isn't interested in keeping Jesus as the highest earner in Portugal (4M€/y) and wants him to start giving a chance to the youngsters from Benfica youth academy (Bernardo Silva left because of him, for example).

Jorge Jesus may be leaving to Sporting. The story should come to a conclusion in the next few days, but next season is shaping to be heated.

I haven't watched either team much lately. Support most teams against Porto though. :smiley-laughing002:
