How Do You Think The Club Should Deal With Leigh Griffiths?

If you can't see the connection between the famine in the middle of the 19th Century, the millions that had to leave Ireland because of it (refugees) and the founding of our club, then I give up for the night. Let someone else explain. I personally wouldn't have thought to describe us as formed by refugees for refugees either, but it really wasn't difficult to understand what he was getting at or the relevance of what he was saying and it was obvious to me straight away that he had a fair point.

Calling Brother Walfrid a refugee is at least as bad as calling Rudi Scakel a refugee . Probably hurting a lot more people . It fully bears out a point I made earlier that everyone who has condemned Griffiths has been racist himself .

What sort of behaviour are you talking about ?
The type of behaviour the media and others outside the club , and some who should know better and who claim to be Celtic fans , are promoting as what Leigh Griffiths is supposed to have done . Or the type of behaviour that no one seems to know for certain that Leigh Griffiths has done .
The police don't know as they need another month to see if they have any evidence .

 

If there wasn't a video with him standing up with his arms in the air signing the song then I would be inclined to agree. If you don't think there was anything wrong with the song, then debate that point, but let's not try and kid ourselves on that he wasn't singing it. If that was the case, surely he would have already come out and denied the allegations. If you were accused of something you didn't do, would you not come out and deny it?

Nobody here has called Brother Walfrid a refugee, nor has anyone asserted that he is anything at all based on his nationality.

As I said before, you have to think about the social context that would bring a man like Brother Walfrid to Glasgow. You know that a refugee situation was one of the main motivations for the creation of our club. You are splitting hairs that really don't need to be split here.

Question for you, ulsterscot: without going as far as saying we were created by and for refugees, do you admit that the singing of the Skacel song by a player of our club is actually insulting the roots of our club because of the links between the great famine, the Irish diaspora in Scotland and the creation of Celtic Football Club?

It's not a racial slur on its own.

Calling someone a * refugee on account of their nationality is a racial slur.

 

Discrimination is everywhere though, so you can't go down that route. We all discriminate in favour of our friends and family all the time. If I turn up at your door and demand food and shelter for the night would you say yes (you probably would for friend's and family)? In fact discrimination and privilege are just opposite sides of the same coin (which is why Cameron's talk of privileges for all was as nonsensical as it was insincere). What kinds of discrimination are acceptable and what aren't? Is it acceptable for employers to discriminate against canditates without qualifications and experience? Most of us would say yes. To avoid this line of argument, the definition is fudged by adding the qualification: "in a way that is worse than the way people are usually treated". How woolly a definition is that!!!!! So was Griffiths treating Skacel worse than the way most people are normally treated by singing an offensive song about him? What if I sing an offensive song about my boss implying he's a money grabbing c*** because he belongs in the category of small business owners? Discrimination is a very tricky issue that we as a society haven't fully worked out yet.

In contrast, the definition of racism posted several times on these two threads is quite clear. If people choose to ignore that because they've always understood racism to be about skin colour, that's their problem.
