Living in Spain I find it quite amusing that there seems to be a lot of dislike for Barcelona on this forum.

I always thought that both clubs shared many social and political similarities beyond what happens on the pitch.

I'm just wondering then, out of those of you who have an opinion on the matter, who do you prefer? Barcelona? Or Real Madrid?

    And why?

Prefer neither. Couldn't give less of a * who wins the league to be honest but they both have some of the best players in the world in their respective teams and 2 of the best ever, so I watch either if they're on the box and nothing better is on.

My uncle is Spanish in is a massive Real Madrid fan so I should like Real Madrid. I used to like Barcelona because I viewed Madrid as being helped by the state. But I don't like the culture of the Barcelona players Celtic have had quite a few fiery matches with Barcelona and Barca have had a culture of cheating for long time the way they surround the ref and the play acting is on par with Porto or Man Utd. At the moment I lean more towards Real Madrid but my politics I support the catalonia independence movement so I am kind of neutral.

Neutral tbh. They both have their positives and negatives.

Barcelona. Our supporters get on like a house on fire - some people seem to have a pole up their * about that for some reason. I've always felt very welcome in Barcelona & they're always up for a good laugh when they're over here.

Our club's also share a very similar history. We're both més que un club. We're both anti-establishment clubs and we've both had a huge role in our countries' nationalist movements.

Real Madrid just now, due to Ronaldo. However I'm not a supporter of any and I usually find myself going for the underdog of the two.

I prefer Real Madrid. I've never had much time for Barcelona, their strips are ugly and they always seem to have had players that I didn't like much whereas Real have had lots of players down the years that I have liked.

Gun to my head - Barcelona. Purely because I enjoy watching their style of football more and I reckon Messi is and will be the greatest player I will ever see in my lifetime.

This is the thing for me, and maybe I'm more interested in the political side of it because I live here, but the truth is that Barcelona are absolutely * detested by virtually every Spanish football fan outside of Catalonia in my experience.

There's nothing that fans and the Spanish media love seeing more than Barca losing.

Real Madrid are the club of the establishment, have always been associated with right-wing types, and obviously have their links with Franco in the past.

Why any Celtic fan who has half a clue about both clubs history would favour them over Barca is baffling to me.

Before I learnt anything about the two clubs historically etc I went to Salou when I was 13 and watched barca in the CL and liked them ever since, Ronaldinho and all being the best player of the time, also seen Messi's first ever CL goal.

If none of that had of happened though I'd still pick barca everyday.

Barcelona had their right-wing fan base also to be fair with Boixos Nois.

Not that I don't favour Barcelona by the way, beacause I do. Always have done, but just pointing that out.

I don't understand where the hate for Barcelona among Celtic fans comes from. Baffles me. Any time their fans have came here they've been brilliant and have got on like a house on fire with us.

It'd be interesting to see how our fans got on with Madridistas.

Madrid was one of the last cities fighting against Franco as well IIRC.

Seems to be the in thing...

Prefer Villarreal to both, but out the two it's Barcelona.

I know it's a very vague way of looking at things, but Madrid are a lot like the old Rangers over here, with Barcelona being the Celtic of Spain.

Madrid stand for the royalty, the well off, the establishment and Spanish nationalism.
