That's ridiculous, Seans 100% bang on, it's an image of an imperialistic pointless war that sent millions of young men to slaughter and it's to be celebrated? It should be remembered and we should remember the reasons behind it to insuremit never happens again.

Stuff like this is just a continued celebration. It's jingoism of the highest order.

It,s an image that persuaded millions of men and boys to sign their own death warrant.......AND THIS !Kitchener realised that the success of the Boers depended heavily on the support they received from the civilian populations, mainly women and children. He proposed the establishment of concentration camps around the country where Afrikaaner children and women were to be confined. At the end of the war, 27 000 Afrikaaner women and children had perished. Most historians observe that this is the one single incident that inspired the rise and growth of Afrikaaner Nationalism, whose ultimate triumph was realised with the Nationalist Party (NP) seizing power in the elections of 1948.[/LEFT]

It is only a coin though. This is a thread with people getting raging about a coin :smiley-laughing002:

Life is too short to be getting angry at coins.

The 'Your Country Needs You' one with that * pointing at you is just a load of * that ties in with this wider campaign of military glorification.See they've also got coins that will represent Scotland, with a thistle,in the year that we have an independence referendum, and a * shamrock for northern Ireland.Arrogant British twats.

    Raging?

Don't see anybody raging in here, just people discussing the image and it's relevance on legal tender.

In fact, the only person raging is you and a few others at people you perceive to be "offended".

    Killing the Wounded
Sven Lindqvist, a Swedish historian, has pointed out that the decisive battle of Omdurman was fought in the name of civilisation, but nobody in Europe asked how it came about that 15,000 Sudanese were killed while the British lost only 48 men. Nor did anyone question why almost none of the 16,000 Sudanese wounded survived. In "Exterminate All the Brutes", Lindqvist turns up 19th-century newspaper accounts of British massacres of wounded Sudanese after the battle.
At the battle's conclusion, Churchill wept. He wrote to his mother on the 26th of January 1899: 'Our victory was disgraced by the inhuman slaughter of the wounded and Lord Kitchener was responsible for this.'

I'm not raging. There are people who are offended and I can understand why but I just think it is such a pointless thing to get upset about. This country has been glorifying war and killing for hundreds of years. I honestly can't see why people would see this coin as controversial in the UK. I'm not surprised by it in the slightest and I don't care enough to be offended by it.

The fact is, that image should be an embarrassment to Britain after what went on in that war but yet it's celebrated to the point it's now on a coin.

I didn't say forget it, I said remember the reasons behind why we sent millions of young men to the slaughter. This is a celebration of that war, no matter what way you paint it and if it 'bothers' you or not.

It's a series of strange decisions, we're having a celebration next year for the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1, does that not strike you as odd? Celebrating the start of one of the most brutal and disgusting periods of human history in a pointless exercise and high class arrogance?

Stuff like this sits uneasy with me.
