We seem to be really popular in that part of the world amongst fans of both Everton and Liverpool. Any idea why? It's unusual for fans of rival clubs to both have respect or even a soft spot for one club.

Theres a book called "We are Celtic Supporters" and theres a whole chapter about the popularity of Celtic among people from the Merseyside area in the old days.

I've always liked Everton the most because when I was younger one of my mates was a big Everton fan and with me being a Celtic fan among the usual Lpool and United it made a bond out of the clubs for me ha

I assume alot of it comes because Liverpool has a high percentage of the population with Irish heritage.

Probably all the Irish there. Carragher, Rooney, Gerrard, John Lennon etc I think all have Irish family or are of Irish decent as are a lot of them, probably just adopted us cause of that.

Christ. It works differently outside Glasgow btw. Not every city has a catholic and protestant club. Liverpool a Hun club :smiley-laughing002:

This is it for me, almost everyone in that part of England seems to have some Irish parent or grandparent from what I've seen anyways.

I think (maybe) the left wing/right wing element.... although even then I'd strongly disagree with Liverpool being the "hun" one of the two.

I always found this the case from scousers on my travels, who I worked with and from going up there..

I do think it's changing however..

I don't think we're as loved up there as many think..

And yes Liverpool were the original orange club and Everton the catholic..
Think both are completely mixed to be fair, for how ever many celtic supporting scousers you'll find the same for them..

A lot to do with it being the main port in the old days..

Why bring up religion? Liverpool actually didn't sign a Catholic player until the late 70s, by the way. Perhaps something to do with Everton being perceived as a Catholic club despite both having their foundations in the Methodist Church. Might be a coincidence, I don't know.

I've always preferred Everton but I sat in the Liverpool end in Dublin and their fans were alright.

I don't think there's any political divide at all really. I think their rivalry is basically limited to football.

I'd say so mate, there real hatred is for mancunians and then down the list Londoners..
I'd say religion completely doesn't come into, just football and possibly areas maybe but that's about it..

It might have in the 60's etc I wouldn't have a clue..

They do have I think it's the biggest march in England every year and some of the biggest lodges in England the orange order..
And 'were' associated to Liverpool football club..

Anyone digging up would come across a lot more about it.

Aye you can just tell with a lot of their surnames...

    P.McCartney
    J.Lennon
    S.Gerrard
    W.Rooney
    J.Carragher
    S.McManaman
    K.Nolan
    J.McEveley
    J.Flanagan(young Liverpool player)
    M.Kelly (young Liverpool player)
    C.McAleny (young Everton player)

Irish surnames are probably just as popular in Liverpool as Glasgow.

Well it was the Everton fans who sang 'Everton are white' when Barnes signed for Liverpool and it was a popular chant with them through the 80's early 90's,sounds pretty right wing to me.* 'em

True has the most lodges of any city in England. It's geographical location and proximity to Ireland means that it has for a long time had a history of Irish Immigration. In that sense traditonally it is more like Glasgow than any other English City as the immigrants competed with the locals. However as you say I think this died out in Liverpool to any real extent a few decades ago and I certainly wouldn't say either club strongly identifies with us that much nowadays. I spent a bit of time in Liverpool in the 90's and didn't really find it that different to most English cities. Some liked us,some liked the huns most didn't give a *.

Yeah spot on mate and I agree it is more like Glasgow than anywhere else in England..
I've actually spoken to a few scousers about this in the past and one was more rangers minded that eventually started liking us coming to watch the games and stuff and seeing the difference between us and them..
Most though don't give a *,it's a myth that although we have some friendly testimonials and stuff that actually they love us..
Liverpool are not really a violent club these days so it's hard to grasp how it would be when they don't really have a hooligan following however Everton very much do and if we were to play them at Goodison there would be quite a lot of trouble sadly..

Football aside most friendly people in the country in my opinion and most knowledgable about football..
    like them both..
