The law is generally there to abuse the moral code if you like. I'm quite up for people having their say, but they should maybe make it a bit more obvious exactly what they are protesting against.

Dev, I did say the comment was to the larger (for me) issue, as opposed to fans against criminalisation specifically, which I have already mentioned I agree with (in terms of it being bullshit legislation for all fans, not just Celtic fans.)

Admittedly, I would have preferred a banner saying "Celtic fans against criminalisation" and on a Saturday afternoon, however. We do like making a rod for ourselves, sadly.

Good question, I guess I would say that it is a completely different scenario. Firstly you're talking about sports clubs on the Island of Ireland, and that many of those names are people who were active members of the GAA, an association founded to promote Irish culture and identity.
However in the cold light of day, despite what Joe Brolly thinks I think it needs to be phased out. The north has come a long way and naming grounds after militant Republicans does not really promote reconciliation.

 There were about probably about 70 of them of a similar theme around the ground at one game a season back. All but ignored.

I suppose it all comes down to this - for me, anyway:

Is it a case of "any publicity is good publicity," or has the general condemnation from the vast majority other than a divided fan base ensured that this is a PR stunt - with the best of intentions, if highlighting the shiteness of fans against criminalisation - that has backfired?

You have The Times (for right or for wrong,) talking about police reports in to terrorist support.....the general publicity is concentrating on anything BUT fans against criminalisation.....UEFA are * off.....the Club are * off because UEFA are * off......

Just seems to me to have been a poorly-advised move, to be honest. Sometimes publicity is just bad publicity.

Getting away from the thread topic a little but I will say that of course you can't just airbrush all these names out of history, however in future I believe naming of grounds, cups, medals, tournaments etc needs to leave this stuff behind.

It's not a black and white thing, it's just time to move on from this stuff that has plauged this country for far too long.

I have the compete opposite opinion, i am proud to play at ground named after Republican people, my own club has its name from a Irish Nationalist and i couldn't be prouder.

I could imagine the uproar around the country if any club even tried to rename their club or fields.

Then where do you draw the line. Should we rename the Hogan stand because the way Michael Hogan died would be a reminder of past conflicts.

What then would be the next step? Renaming all the streets named after historic figures. Stop teaching history at school.
