Great result. We were a shade fortunate to come out of that game with a win but after the deflected goal in Milan and the Neymar episode we probably deserved some good fortune.

Some people on here are never happy....3 points at home in the Champions League...what else you wanting...........Ok we weren't at our best football wise but what do you want, play silky football and have another hard luck story like the first 2 games!!! This was always about 3 points and was always going to be difficult. Kayal, Stokes, Pukki and Mulgrew put in some shift. Big Virgil was immense at the back, his reading of the game gets better. And big credit has to go to young Forrest, I wanted him to step up to the mark tonight, take some responsibility and he did that, big set of balls at the penalty, he showed a lot of maturity. Yes we all want to see us play attacking attractive football but sometimes you need to battle and tonight we did that. Enjoy the 3 points and another CL game to come.

    A few thins:

van Dijk is absolutely incredible. He should be going to the World Cup... I think more people should trust our ability to replace players once we lose them. Obviously it won't work like for like every time, but he is a serious upgrade over Wilson in two regards: a) he is simply a better player; b) (perhaps more importantly) he makes Efe better and is a calming influence on him. Our back two are rock solid together.

Pukki is getting misjudged - he was clearly playing withdrawn role and wasn't supposed to be going for goals today. His lateral movement was phenomenal - he's not as technical as Commons obviously, but his movement and ability to shield defenders is much better than Commons. Also, while Commons is technically excellent, his vision isn't that great and he can be prone to losing possession a lot. Plus he doesn't work that hard. Pukki was superior in both regards, and so in a match like this I think Pukki is exactly what we needed.

Our wing play was excellent, but Sammy is quite one-dimensional and wasn't too effective until they began getting tired. Forrest was great.

Finally, I don't think our level of play changed that much, only our opponent. I think that people need to pay more attention to the process when it comes to thinking of the future. We took advantage of their naivete and got a lucky break - pretty much exactly the way that Milan beat us. For us this year, the breaks have gone for/against us pretty evenly so I don't think we can complain about that for now. I thought we were much less disciplined today though - we won because we were stronger than Ajax, who thought they could walk in and beat us. If we behave the same way going to Amsterdam then the result will be similar, but in their favor rather than ours.

Exactly. They didn't really look to have the quality to trouble us too much in attack. I'm sure they will be different at home but we can score over there no doubt.

    He was being ironic mate.

    Brilliant win !

Funny thing is I don't think we actually played that well.

    Van Dijk was class.

Lets skelp them over there and give us a chance to go through.
