Look this is football. Regardless of what we could do or what we have done, there will always be nights like these. Simple as that.

There will also always be nights like Barca at home, Spartak home and away etc etc

Right i've just typed out and deleted like three paragraphs worth of ramblings about how the club is run, who we should have bought, if it would have made a difference etc etc but I think i'd rather just say,

mind when that * Zaccardo decked it over the advertising boards? :smiley-laughing002:

I agree with you on the bolded part, when the newhuns come up the board will be desperate to outspend them. Karma for the "for every fiver..." * that corrupt numpty Murray spouted.
As for the other part, financially we are 100% sound, there is literally not a single chance in * of us getting liquidated like the huns. Their hilarious death infact only emphasises just how good a state we are in. It would be tragic if we were to ruin this chance and fall away again, because make no mistake about it we genuinely do have a chance to be a top European team again within a decade or so.

You're misunderstanding all my posts mate. I'm not expecting us to win the Champions League this season. Nor am I suggesting we spend 35 million in the upcoming January transfer window, but at the same time I sincerely hope the board's long-term ambitions stretch beyond merely being a CL group stage team.

Yes, it's a * sight better than being a EL group stage team, or being KO'd in qualifying, but I would hate for us to become an Arsenal or a Galatasary. We are at our best position we have been at for probably decades.

I am happy with our club atm, and would be happy with 10 years of succesive CL qualification. But it can't be JUST that, we have to think and believe that we can go higher. But we won't if our own fans are happy to just accept mediocre levels of success.

Izaguirre, Commons and Stokes ain't good enough for that level. Nothing surer. The rest of the side were.

Stand-outs for me. Mulgrew, Lustig, Ambrose, Brown and Matthews. Samaras could have been the difference in flashes.

I agree Caz the summer just past was the time to lay down a marker about our ambitions and personally the board failed, we are a good team but we need 2/3 players of a higher quality to make us good enough to go to the san siro and create and finish chances, its all fine and well having the possession but we need to do something with it.

AwesomeCaz you're talking about levels we haven't been at for decades. Since before we were born. There are financial realities which cause us not to be able to compete on a level playing field.

I can see it panning out like this

    Ajax away 1 pt
    Ajax Home 3 pts
    Barca Home 1 pt
    Barca Away 0 pts
    Milan Home 3 pts

Don't think 8 will be enough. Unless we beat Ajax twice and get something in one of the barca games we won't be finishing 2nd. Thoughts????????????

I think Mathews is a Bale in the making, and any team that can see this will snap him up for pennyies!

Look at last year, played left back and had Barca in his pocket, played right wing and everyone thought he was amazing and it doesn't matter who counters he has them beat...

What a find and what a player :shamrock::celt_2:

Spot on I said this in the other thread

It was EXACTLY the same last year though. We needed that CAM player who is a class above the rest, and we didn't get him. Understandably we don't have the funds to buy whoever we want, but unless we find a gem in that role we won't grow.

Commons is an excellent SPL player and has a good performance here and there in the Champions League. But, like I've said before on here, he isn't a game changer, and cannot perform consistently among the elite. This Summer we needed a Lubo and Finnbogason (I know) type player.

Milan were there for the taking ALL NIGHT and we lacked the quality, something that was seen time and time again last season but something that hasn't really changed. I'm reasonably happy with our signings this summer but a few on here are getting ahead of themselves. I am realistic and I hope to pip Ajax to 3rd. We are 2 or 3 players away (like last year) from becoming a strong Champions League side. The board will not budge though it seems and the consequences are performances tonight.

Overall it was a valiant effort by the team that lacked quality in the final 3rd. A lot of positives but the same old story when it comes to Celtic. Rant over.

I'd like to know where the goals are coming from in these games?

I think the board should pull their finger out stop creaming over their balance sheet and bring in a couple decent players who have experience in Champions League! Games like tonight frustrate me if we had the wee bit of quality we could have seen off Milan! Its frustrating seems to me like a wasted opportunity to get points on the board, and it doesn't help the fact our next game is against Barca who will be looking for revenge, just hope Milan beat Ajax next game.

I am acutely aware of the financial situation but some people - the board and some fans - seem to use it as a fact to hide behind - an excuse.
We are an incredibly well run club, infact, arguably the best ran in major European competition. We fans need the Champions League but, contrary to popularily false belief, we would not go under without it. We budget WITHOUT CL money, and yet have had 2 successive years of it now. Plus the (at least) 10 million pounds profit we made on transfers this past summer.

It all comes down to what you want. If you are genuinely happy with merely qualifying for the CL, but never expecting or demanding anything in the competition proper, then fine.

But I am convinced we have the base as a club to build on the last couple of years and look to really achieve in Europe.

I've always said if he decides to stick around at our club for a long time he could go on to be a legend. Think he's got the potential to be really world class. Just have to wait and see as his rep grows whether or not he thinks the EPL is a better place for him or not.
