bit of info about them from our very own Mikael Lustig..with some other comments from the gaffer and some random swedish * from Malmo

CELTIC star Mikael Lustig has revealed Elfsborg are scared of facing the Hoops in Europe.

The Swedish champions wanted to avoid Neil Lennon’s men in the Champions League qualifiers after watching them reach the last 16 in the previous campaign.

Now Lustig hopes his side can live up to the talk in the Elfsborg dressing-room by claiming a convincing victory at Parkhead in Wednesday’s first leg.

Elfsborg might be feeling a bit more upbeat about the third round qualifier after watching Malmo trash Hibs 9-0 on aggregate in the Europa League last week.

But Lustig is confident of seeing off his fellow Swedes for the second campaign running after beating Helsingborgs last term.

The full-back said: “There’s not much difference between Malmo, Helsingborgs and Elfsborg.

“Both Elfsborg and Malmo want to play on the deck. They have good footballers and are similar.

“The top five teams in the Swedish league would probably be top sides here as well but Celtic have a better squad than Swedish teams.

“Elfsborgs have good players and I know Anders Svensson well. We play together in the national team. He has 141 caps and is chasing Thomas Ravelli’s record of 143.

“I spoke to Anders a little bit when we knew we were going to face each other. Elfsborg think they will be good games against Celtic but they were not happy with the draw.

“They thought Celtic and Basel were the two toughest teams. It’s really big for them to come here and play at Celtic Park.

“Elfsborg play on an artificial pitch. Their record at home is unbelievable but they struggle a little bit away so hopefully we can get a good result on Wednesday.

"The first leg is really important, especially when you play at home. If they score it is going to be harder for us.”

That was hammered home when Celtic took on Helsingborgs last summer – with Kris Commons grabbing a crucial away goal after just two minutes of the first leg.

That set the stage for a 4-0 aggregate win but Lustig knows it could have been different.

He said: “We have a good record against Swedish teams but we’re taking nothing for granted.

“Remember, last season Fraser Forster made great saves against Helsingborgs in Sweden.

“In the first half they had three great chances and we were really lucky to be 1-0 up. Had they scored one of those chances it would have been a different game.”

Elfsborg are managed by Jorgen Lennartsson, who was Lustig’s coach when he played for Sweden’s Under-21 side.

The 48-year-old was also assistant boss at Helsingborgs when they reached the Champions League in 2000 and Lustig knows he will have Elfsborg prepared.

The Hoops defender said: “Jorgen is a really good coach. He’s just crazy about football and watches 10-20 games a week.

“He likes to play football on the deck. Elfsborg are not that big a team, they have small players who are quite quick. He doesn’t like to take many chances so I think they will sit back a little bit in Glasgow.

“I don’t know their exact formation but they will play four at the back. In midfield it could be a diamond shape or two defensive midfielders.

“They have a bit of pace up front, especially on the left. They are going to play Niklas Hult, who has been injured. Before he was out he looked really sharp and is probably one of their quickest players.

“On the right they have Stefan Ishizaki, who is not very quick but has a good right foot. It’s going to be a tough 90 minutes but hopefully I’m going to make Hult run too!

“We struggled a little bit in the home leg against Helsinki last year and it was the same in the away game in Helsingborgs.
“We need to be focused but I feel we are in good nick.”

It was Lustig who got Celtic off and running in this Euro campaign as he opened the scoring in the last round against Cliftonville.

The 26-year-old has become a key player since his Bosman move from Rosenborg in January 2012 and Lennon is thrilled with his form.

The Parkhead boss said: “Mikael is a fantastic player. Sevilla asked about him last year.

“He is consistent, excellent in the air and good on the ball.

“Mikael is unflappable – he doesn’t seem to make mistakes or many wrong decisions.

“He has been a brilliant acquisition and is under-rated because he’s a quality player. He can play in the centre, as he did against Benfica last season, but we’ll play him at right-back mostly.

“Mikael has a great passing range and is a good finisher, although he doesn’t get the opportunity often.

“But he can do it from set-pieces. All-round he has been a brilliant signing and there’s scope for him to improve again.

“He’s low maintenance, you don’t need to bother about him. There are a few injury issues we need to keep an eye on but I’m hoping to get him injury-free for a long time.”

While Lustig believes Elfsborg will be running of scared of the Hoops, Malmo forward Markus Halsti believes Celtic should be wary of the Swedish champions.

The 29-year-old – who netted in Thursday’s 7-0 rout of Hibs at Easter Road – knows just how good Lennartsson’s side are.

And he insists the Parkhead side could be in for a shock.

Halsti said: “Elfsborg have been a little bit up and down this season but if they manage to reach their top level – especially at home where they have artificial grass – then I don’t know how well Celtic will do.

“They have some good young guys coming through and have spent money over the past couple of years to assemble a good team.

“It is probably going to be a tough fight for Celtic.

“Almost anything can happen over the two matches. The fact Celtic have just started their season means it will be a challenge for them.

“Celtic will be favourites but you never know.”

Malmo have now put both Rangers and Hibs to the sword in Europe over the past few seasons.

And Halsti would love to see Elfsborg strike another blow for the Swedish league when they head to Parkhead this week.

He said: “We’ve had good results against Scottish sides. Swedish teams are quite good playing against teams from this country.”

I certainly hope so. That was annoying not being able to get a stream of the second leg of the Cliftonville game. Although at least that tie was in the bag already so I wasn't too bothered.

I'm worried about the turnout for this one now after seeing the amount of STH who haven't took their seat up. It's looking like 30,000 at the moment.

Have you seen the seating plan? Looks like only 20,000 have been sold so far. Cliftonville was on the Season Card and fans had a month to sort out tickets & travel, this isn't on the Card and was only confirmed last Tuesday.

This game is more important than an actual Group Stage match, so I'm really disappointed.

They only went on sale to the general public this morning?

I know my old dear is going down to get hers this morning as is my younger brother, probably find the majority of people are the same. There's been a very short period of time from being confirmed as playing Elfsborg to the actual game on Wednesday - the ticket office will be busy right up until the game day.

They've been on sale since straight after the Cliftonville game mate. This morning they released the Season Ticket Holders seats which haven't been taken up, which has freed up around 15,000-20,000 more seats.

There are a huge number of seats still on sale for this. Even in the sections you'd expect to see sold out normally (e.g 110, 112, 113 etc).

I'd be surprised if we got 35,000 at this rate. The club made a massive mistake not putting this on the ST. Pitiful when we drew in 51,000 for the HJK game last year.
