Was it not something to do with his dad why we couldn't get him?

Doubt it would be Doyle... he says a "no1 striker" and I just don't think Doyle fits the bill. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would be a first choice striker, given his recent scoring record etc.

If Lennon has stated that it's someone we've not been linked with then that straight away rules out Doyle as all the papers have done is throw his name up.

Rudnevs scores most of his goals from inside the box, so he's definitely a typical poacher and he's not particularly versatile either. Sure, he can score goals (with a rare long shot thrown in the mix), but overall he's completely dependent on his teammates. Limited dribbling skills, limited passing skills. Doesn't play great defensively.

And that's exactly why he has scored only 1 goal in 20-30 matches for the Latvian national team and why he was benched in the last match against Bosnia. We usually play defensively and rely on counter-attacks and most of the time we simply don't have the possession to feed him with balls. So he's of limited use for us with the game we're playing.

But, no, Latvia is not exactly a beer-league team. We usually finish somewhere around the 4th place in EURO/WC qualifying groups and we do steal some points off of the top teams every year. Blowout losses are VERY rare and, for the record, our head coach was fired after that 0-5 loss to Bosnia.

We've scored 27 goals in the last 25 matches. Rudnevs has scored only 1 of those 27 goals.

So before getting all psyched about the possibility of signing Rudnevs, you should first think about how you'll have to re-shape your entire gameplan and build the whole game around him, if you want Rudnevs to be as succesful as he was in his previous club teams.

    Rudnevs

I am latvian, but I hope that Celtic will not buy Rudnevs. He is not good enough and I don`t think that he would suit Celtic because he is not good technically and is good only in penalty area. He has scored only one goal in almost thirty matches for national team and I don`t think that it`s only because other players aren`t good enough. But the main problem is that Rudnevs is not good person and very scandalous in Latvia. For example, in one interview he said that he doesn`t want to speak Latvian language because he is russian.

A hat-trick against Juventus for Poznan and double figures in the Bundesliga in his first season, plus he's young? I don't see how he cannot be good enough.

    very good characterization, very precisely
Rudnevs could score goals in Scotland, but wouldb be no use in Europe.
So, I would say waste of money

Seems like the Latvians bear a grudge. I'm sure Hamburger and Lech fans would speak very differently of him.

Believe me. I have seen him many, many times. He is not bad, but Celtic should get better. He can score goals, but need that all team play for him and is not good in passing.

Look at the replays of all of his goals. 3 of the goals against Juventus were scored within a couple of meters from the goal line. A lot of his goals are scored pretty much on an empty net.

It's got nothing to do with some 'grudge', we've just been following him for years since he was playing for Daugava in the Latvian Virslīga, which, btw, just lost to Elfsborg 1-11 (agg.) in the CL qualies. :smiley-laughing002: He didn't score nearly as many goals for Daugava as he did in the Polish league. Why? Because he's a poacher and he's not particularly useful if the game isn't built purely around him.

Currently he's overrated by the market. He's still one of the best Latvian players and I hope he'll land in a top tier team with significant playing time, so Celtic wouldn't be the worst scenario by any means. :) But you should manage your expectations.

Celtic's main striker just now, Gary Hooper, currently has the game built around him.

So I see no problem with Rudnevs fitting in, proven goalscorer who's young enough to improve other aspects of his game just like Hooper ended up managing whilst with us.
