    No, he controls games and gets on the ball to play. It's part of his and Brown's role but we don't really have anyone in there protecting the defence.

    He was suspect at times in Europe defensively but * are acting as though he was the same in the SPL.

    He wasn't. An occasional slip now and again but everytime he played you felt comfortable, especially last season alongside Denayer. He helped us big time domestically and teams will feel more confident coming up against us now without him.

    He will be a huge loss. No matter how you try and pitch it.

    we dont have another van dijk to step in, but int he grand scheme of things, it doesnt really matter to us, we are a business first and foremost apparently and this is an excellent deal for us, we should be happy that lawwell is meeting his targets

    I think the suspect defensively thing in Europe is overblown as well, look back at this thread about our European games and he's regularly praised. We weren't the best collectively over the last couple of years in Europe, the full team needs to be top of their game in Europe defensively. Often it was Van Dijk, Lustig and Gordon/Forster and nobody else really.

    So who the * are we signing, Fletcher ffs? What upsets me most about this is we wont even reinvest the money, so in the end we could have enforced his contract if they really wanted him to stay.

    The problem for him here was that he is a great player who was surrounded by total mediocrity at times. A lot of the players here aren't on his level, and the opposition players in the league certainly are not.

    He was the best player in Scotland for two years, but yet in European games he was sometimes accused of being 'suspect', simply because the difference in quality between domestic and European games was so vast.

    It must have been hard for him to go from strolling through league and cup games with total ease, to then facing teams that actually possess quality throughout their entire team in European competition.

    I think it's overblown as well personally, I've said that in that CL campaign where we got humped oot he was never as bad as folk made out.

    Everyone around him didn't exactly help.
