What a player gutted hes gone but such is the climate we live in. We move on though and hope this money is used to wrap up a few deals which will help improve the team.

If Lawwell is so good at negotiating, how did we not get him in a swap deal for Wanyama? :fear:

He was a good player for us but I honestly think he's been overrated to *.

Although I wish him all the best, now I couldnae really give a fk what he does now.

I guess for Celtic's future transfers then hopefully it'll work out as not to * on our players who head down. Guess that's the only way I hope it works out for him (or should I say that I'm interested in the slightest).

Once we got put out the Cl, I basically came to terms with him leaving there and then, so no really feeling much about this tbh... We move on.

Wish him all the best, really good player for us, will be missed.

People on the Southampton forum saying we got a 15% sell-on fee. Not a bad deal for us at all

VIRGIL van Dijk has joined Southampton on a five-year deal. The Dutch defender moves to the English Premier League club after two successful seasons at Celtic.

Signed from Dutch side, Groningen, in June 2013, the 24-year-old defender has gone on to make 115 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 15 goals. He won two league titles and one League Cup

A spokesperson for Celtic said: “Celtic did absolutely everything we could to keep Virgil at the club, including an offer of a new extended contract on a number of occasions. However, it became very clear that he had made his mind up on seeking a new challenge in the English Premier League.

“Virgil has served Celtic very well for the past two seasons, we thank him for his contribution to the club and we wish him all the best for the future at Southampton.”
Virgil van Dijk told the official Celtic website: “I would like to thank all the Celtic fans for the magnificent support they have given me during my time at the club.
“Celtic is a brilliant football club, it will always be in my heart and I will always be a Celtic supporter myself.
“I know Celtic did not want me to leave and wanted to extend my contract. The club did everything to keep me and I appreciate that but I felt the time was right for a new challenge in the English Premier League.

“I thank everyone at the club, the manager and all the staff and I wish Celtic and the fans the very best for the future.”

It was always going to be necessary for the board to make up for the lost CL money.

Realistically, there was no chance of him staying after today. We all expected him to go after Maribor last season and he gave us another year. We failed again to get into the group stages.

I hope we reinvest that 11M in the squad and not use it as money to replace lost earnings for the CL.

If we do indeed sign the croatian for 3-4M, we need another striker and DM/CB.

Good luck to VvD. He'd outgrown Scottish Football about two years ago so was overdue to leave. Nir Bitton will be the next to go.

I don't get why some people are being so bitter about this. He's a professional footballer ergo he wants to play at the highest level possible and earn as much money as possible while doing so. Moving to Southampton from Celtic is a step in the right direction on both those fronts(and before anyone starts screaming 'He'll never get Champions League football at Southampton!', the way things are going at Celtic Park he wouldn't have been getting it anytime soon here either). He will now get to pit his wits against the likes of Manchester Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal etc instead of having to play against * like St. Johnstone and Partick Thistle while hoping in vain that we can scrape through to the Champions League group stage once every three or four years.

Thanks for the memories and the high quality play, Virgil. I can't think of another Celtic centre-back I enjoyed watching play as much as I enjoyed watching you.
