Except it doesn't. Unless you detach yourself from the reality of our club and live in some utopian footballing land where rainbow coloured unicorn kittens with butterfly wings gambol happily on golden lawns.

The top clubs and leagues in Europe buy and sell proven class. Our raison d'etre is spotting people potentially "on the way up" and then developing them into hopefully much better players.

Pretty sure this isn't a secret. Maybe Murph missed the memo - it happens, no dramas :50:

£11.5m is great money considering he hasn't even been capped yet. I think he's overrated anyway.

Catch ya big man. Cheers and good luck.

For some reason, I don't feel the same affiliation with Virgil as with other past players, even though he's a real good talent. Can't quite put my finger on why but I'm not as disappointed as I thought I would be.

So you think Van Dijk leaving improves us as a team?

Good luck big yin. Done what it said on the tin. Came for little money, plied his skills. Sold on for much profit. And so it continues. Who's Next?

Defensively at times he needs to sharpen up but I wouldn't say he is vastly overrated by many. Has all the attributes to be a top player and not many centre halfs like him in Europe.

One thing is for sure we are now a poorer side without him.

Considering the money spent down there now, £11.5m is * all.

I'm interested to see how he will fair when asked to defend for the majority of the game and not be wandering around the opponents 18 yard box.

All the best, great player for us and wish he could have stayed.

I never got attached to him as player as I knew from the moment he was signed he wouldn't stay here long. I'm happy to take the money, considering he doesn't really want to here and we have already signed a replacement. I remember when petrov was sold it was really gutting, but now I'm happy to see it happen.

the oneil era is over, the days of holding onto players in their peak years and offering them 30k a week are over for now. I would rather follow the model porto etc use anyway

Bit of a steal again from Southampton, *. Good luck to Virgil. Hopefully he goes one step further than Victor (if be does join Spurs) and signs for one of the top four.

Best of luck big man. Never spat the dummy and downed tools like many prima donnas in the past. He's a snip at that price for Southampton, he'll end up at the top.

If the money is spent on other players who realise some of their their potential whilst with us, possibly yes. If they don't (realise their potential), then possibly no.

I'm not sure what the debate is here? That this is our business model is an indisputable fact. If you or Murph don't agree with it, then that's fine but things aren't about to change anytime soon.

Celtic won't sign "proven class" this window or the next one (or the next or the next) so having this idea that we will sell someone for big money and invest it in someone of proven significance is futile.

Unless your idea of "proven class" is someone like John Eustace who was pure amazing at Derby *cough*

Why berate Celtic for following their stated business model?
