I don't see why not. We spent around £2.5 million on him, and that's well within our budget.

Mope because we only got Van Dijk due to us getting to the last 16 the previous year, our standing as a football club was a lot higher due to that and besting Barca.

Has he actually ever had a good performance outwith the SPL? He is a class above Scottish football but I personally think he will probably not progress further than southampton.

I like how he has handled himself throughout. his disappointment at not qualifying came
across like it had overshadowed any aspirations to move.

I think he would have stayed for the CL campaign and left in January had we made it.

    Bon Voyage Virgil.

The one decision that them crowd of ballons got right was keeping him until our European fate was decided. Wish him all the best and it's a pity we didnt get to see him partnered alongside an experienced rock.

I'm guessing there aren't many free kick taking, 6ft 4, rapid, strong, young, technically brilliant centre halfs kicking about for £2.5m, that's why.

We got lucky with him at that price.

Mixed feelings when his last two Euro games conceded three goals from corners pumped right into the 6 yard box. It shouldn't really happen once but to happen three times in such important games is beyond atrocious.

Not watched the goals back as still a bit sickened so I'm not sure how much fault is apportioned to him but regardless he is part of a CB pairing who lost them.

Having said that, the big man has been empirical for us on most occasions and has given us some good years service. Absolutely wish him all the best.

    Good Luck Virgil.

Well if the deal happens I really don't see much money being spent on a replacement, maybe even another loan deal for a denayer etc, and offload some deadwood to try and make up the lost money

Value severely depreciated now we don't cash CL cash. Will be lucky to get 8m.

Denayer is going to Marseille or Galatasary so that dream is dead
Honestly got no idea who we can chase as his replacement that PL would open the wallet for

We could probably get Stephen McManus back. He'd be within Lawwell's price range.

It's a very strange situation regarding Van Dijk, and one I've never really witnessed before.

He is capable of strolling the SPL, and all domestic competition, but when it comes to Europe I think he has been lacking.

Not sure where that leaves him in the EPL?

Needs to be a permanent signing to replace him, no loan deals. We really need to build a solid, settled defence for next seasons CL qualifiers. Get Janko playing as many games as possible, a centre back in for Virgil and a left back as competition for Izzy.

We really can't afford to go into these matches with a back 4 that have barely played together.

I think he'll do well there, but not as consistently as he does up here.

For me he has never really lacked anything in Europe either though, he is usually still always one of our best players and wether it's been AC Milan, Barca or Malmo he's always still looked really comfortable on the ball been able to waltz past players for fun and passed the ball about with quality.

Yes we have conceded a lot of goals in Europe but unless we set up defensively then thats a given, we haven't set up that defensively in Europe since Strachan left. Strachan got a lot of sneaky tight good results, mostly at home but we lost basically every away game and hardly scored(as we set up negatively and thus usually just got severely pummeled away from home no matter who we played). Under Mowbray, Lennon and Deila we've played better football in Europe, won or drawn a lot of away games and scored a lot of goals in Euope although conceded a lot more too.

Yet look at Strachan's defenders, they were honkin apart from Hinkel really they were all diddies but they just set up really defensively (the defence and midfield).
