When van Dijk does eventually leave, I wouldn't mind seeing him at Southampton. Forster, Virgil and Wanyama would be the makings of a cracking spine of the team.

Its significnatly harder to win the top league as a provincial club in England, than it is as the Old Firm in what in most years has been a two horse race in Scotland.

The list of English teams that would be 3rd in size to Celtic and Rangers in Scotland is huge. It is with all of them Southampton have had to compete with in order to win silverware in the last 130 years.

Plus in any case, that is the past. Southampton have now overtaken a lot of English clubs in turnover, academy reputation, infrastructure at the stadium & training ground and also in quality of the playing squad.

In the past some teams have been better placed to win the league, but Saints have overtaken a large number of what many would consider big English clubs.

    Define "pointless".

Playing for a team that came 7th in the Premier League and is on a European campaign this season isn't just money. If van Dijk joins Southampton a key motivation for him is likely to be that it raises his profile in the eyes of the Dutch national team.

Liebherr had the club's long term interest at heart.

Which players are you suggesting we had to sell in order to survive?

Nonsense, both were promotion seasons with great atmospheres throughout the season and both had sellout games.

    Who were the opponents?

btw I said the average for the season was 26,420. That doesn't mean every game had that attendance... its an average.

So what? He was signed to get Saints promoted to the Premier League. Saints got promoted to the Premier League with him as a regular and one of the top assist makers in the Championship. He did the job Saints signed him for.

Having a nice view of some mountain ranges doesn't make the actual training ground better. You were implying Celtic had a better training ground than Southampton. I point out to you that Southampton have recently spent £40m upgrading theirs and you have no real comeback other than "Celtic have a nice view".

    On what is that based?

    Correct, but so what?

It wasn't as a money making venture, he did it for enjoyment.

So what? Its also in part due to academy producing high quality players.

    Why is it "overachieving"?

    Pot, kettle etc.

I think to be fair Southampton is a nice club and calling them pointless is a bit silly, not to say elitist. History is an ongoing thing, who knows what they might win in the near future if they keep going like they have been.

He's never denied we are bigger and we all know they'd comfortably be a similar size to Aberdeen in Scotland so comparisons with Falkirk and St Mirren are just plain daft.

Current financial realities are exactly as he says too.

I probably went over the top - but only because he was being a typical arrogant English football fan. Again, I apologise - to Celtic fans not that WUM.

I didn't even mention what Celtic has done in its past - just point out a few truths when he started getting superior (we spent £40 million on a training facility etc.). Gets on my *.

Where's that most hated football team thread.............

He's not bad for an EPL fan. They've got a £40m training place, fair play. He wasn't being arrogant or slating Lennoxtown.

Mostly because it'd be very * hard to pick fault with Lennoxtown.

Alter your quote slightly and can you imagine being the creative midfielder playing against 2 holding midfielders in the shape of Wanyama & VVD - ouch that tackle from them both :smiley-laughing002:

Ronald Koeman apparently said in the media today that "He's a very good player and they're very interested in the player"

We'll not sell until after the qualifiers but really think he'll go now:38: Hopefully we get £10-11m+ for him because he's a class act.
