He may not have been a wanyama standout but he hasn't been too bad bar barca and Milan at home, I don't think. He's had some top performance's, Milan away for example..
If the Dutch had the same mentality as the Belgians then he'd have another way of showcasing his talents but hey ho..

Have you seen him brushed off falling on his * in Europe? Even when we've been hammered, can't say I remember it. You know what I'm saying about brushing strikers off, he's been absolutely strolling through pretty much every game, like a top quality player would, in Scotland, a heavy stand out..

Wanyama's are hard to find, but Virgil's are not? Sorry I don't see many strong, quick, ball playing centre halves in England at the moment. Perhaps that's why he's been linked with half the league? Just a thought..

If we take 8 or 9, I think we're selling ourselves short, both in the market they are operating in financially, and the player he is and will become..

for him to get a move to a decent club, he needs a really good Champions league champion, otherwise the most he can hope for is Sunderland or newcastle coming in for him. Maybe southampton.

It's a tough one to judge how much he's "worth".

In my opinion, he's the best player we've had in many years, even better than Wanyama (although they play different positions so quite hard to compare). However, Virgil has had a few poor/average performances in Europe whereas Wanyama was dominant in most matches and was fantastic against Barca.

For that reason alone, Wanyama would command a bigger fee than Virgil. If Victor was £12 million then I'd be expecting close to £10 million for Van Dijk.

Mark my words, we'll get £9 million for him tops, with £8 million being more realistic.

I think that is a little on the low side. I understand why you think that, but I have faith in Peter to extract maximum revenue from the sale when the offers come in.

Would be worth holding onto him until next summer.

If that is the case then I'd be put off selling him, as long as we qualify for Europe. He may want to go but if it's an offer that we feel is on the low side, then we don't have to sell, he has 2 years left and a few good performance's and a move in January, is another option, 'if', we aren't getting value..

agreed, we don't need to sell. two years on the contract and unless someone wants to pay silly money, by that i mean over 12 Mill, then we should hold him to contract and sell on our terms.

he cost 2 million to buy? or 2.5 ? so we need to clear 10 million as there might be a sell on clause from his previous club. If that is the case i would push for 15 mill. The EPL will pay.

I tend to agree but I've learned not to underestimate Lawwell. £6m for Ki when he was our 5th choice midfielder is testamount to how good he is at the negotiating table.

I'd tend to think £9m and a hefty sell on fee.

Did I mention how I believe that demand in the marketplace plays a huge part? :icon_mrgreen:

thats valid, there might not be that much interest in him. if that is the case we should not sell. We should hold on and until someone is really desperate and will pay over the odds.

The player also plays a part in the situation. If he's really adamant that he wants to leave, it's not worth keeping him. His attitude may be bad, and you don't need that in a dressingroom.

If that's the case then we should get £30m odd for him.

The demand for big, athletic, very quick, ball playing centre backs is insane.

Hey, if he was currently a Southampton player that's the kind of money you'd likely be talking about.

    Yup.

Perception of our league plays the largest part in what price we'll get for him.

It's not perception really, as he is pretty much untested at the top level.

Which doesn't stop other leagues, with a poor standard, raking in top dollar for their players.

We both suffer and gain from being so close to the Premiership.

I'm hoping if we continue down this route and the likes of Forster, Ki, Wanyama and probably Van Dijk play well down south then we'll eventually get to the level where we can demand a price.

Look at Porto that way. £30m for Managala? They pick their price and others will pay it.

They've established that reputation over the last 12 years though.

Porto and the Portuguese league are a step above the SPFL though, aren't they? I mean, they made the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season, didn't they?

They also spend a fair whack on players as well. Mangala cost them £11.5 million (I know Defour was included, but still), so he was hardly bought for chump change to begin with.

I get what you mean though, but I don't think we'll get that kind of recognition any time soon unless we're prepared to really invest some cash in the young players who'll be interesting the City's, Madrid's and so forth tomorrow.

Aye, that's why we're not at that level yet mate. That's where I want to see us heading though, only way to do that is to get into the Champions League on a consistent basis, sell for big bucks (once a season, keep a spine of a team), for those players to do well and for Lawwell to keep being an absolute * to negotiate with.

The thing is, for those kinds of players you really do have to spend a bit more than we are. I'm talking the £5-£12 million range.

    We won't do that.
