Frank de Boer urges Virgil van Dijk not to swap chance of Champions League football for relegation battle in England

DUTCH legend Frank de Boer has urged wantaway Celtic star Virgil van Dijk not to swap the opportunity of Champions League football for a relegation battle in England.
Parkhead stopper van Dijk last week told the Hoops hierarchy to cash in on him now after admitting he was disappointed previous bids for him were knocked back.
The 23-year-old former Groningen man fears playing his trade in Scotland will hinder his chances of featuring for Holland at Euro 2016 next summer.
But former Rangers defender de Boer – Holland’s most-capped outfield player with 112 appearances – has warned van Dijk playing for a struggling side south of the border would not boost his international chances.
Sunderland and Newcastle have both been linked with a move for the Dutchman but Ajax boss de Boer said: “To just leave Celtic who will be playing in the Champions League themselves next season for a team that could be fighting a relegation battle in England isn’t deserving of van Dijk.
“We have seen time and time again players who play in the Champions League have such a better chance of representing their national team. That should be a real consideration for him.”

    * *. * De Boer talking a lot of sense, what the *'s going on?!

He was a class player though and he's right: Virgil would benefit from another CL campaign and we would certainly benefit by having him. Pity we have no choice but to sell him really.

You would like to think that someone like commons has taken virgil aside and pointed out players like Hopper who ran down south in search of international recognition.

I never rated that Hopper jumpy Bstd that he was :56: but I though Hooper was okay; but your right he should have stayed might even be in the England team now.

Although I agree with what you are saying, and I can see where you are coming from, that is all guesswork. The reality is, Van Dijk hasn't looked great in Europe for one reason or another, whereas Wanyama was a standout performer for us. His performance against Barcelona alone probably added a few million to his price tag.

Lenny wasn't particularly defensive in Europe outside of the Barca games. Even then he had attacking players on the pitch, just we got pinned back.

It's why his last 16 team scored the most goals in any Champions League campaign for us.

Wanyama was collasal in Europe no matter how we played.

Lennon played two up top against Barca and Commons was in midfield as well. Do not equate not having possession against the greatest ever possession team to playing defensive or negative. Real Madrid are without the ball for long periods in every classico. We beat them, we won the game, the whole point of football is to put the ball into the net more than the other team. I swear some people would rather be an unlucky loser than a clever winner. We were unlucky not to be 3-0 up in that game at one stage. In fact we were robbed.

The Sun are saying Norwich are going to make a bid of £8 million for him.

He's not going to Norwich FFS. :smiley-laughing002:

If the Sun isn't making it up, it only means Norwich have blinked first. I'd like to see him at a club like Arsenal but it's probably too early for him; but for sure he can at least join a Southampton or a Spurs.

    Norwich for £8 million. :56::56:

I don't think that's true, you know. We tend to do our business behind closed doors and it gets announced when completed. I doubt Southampton were the only ones who came in for Vic and Lurch. The fact that the likes of Norwich and West Ham are leaking their interest to the media smacks of desperation on their part IMO. They know that as soon as Lawwell gets back from his holiday, negotiations will start with the real contenders.

I'd lose all respect for him if he moved to Norwich City.

Imagine him and Hooper both there...it's embarrassing enough being a feeder club for Southampton FFS!:smiley-laughing002:

Not sure why folk would be surprised if he were to go to Norwich.

He'd have a better chance of getting into the Dutch squad and he'll be earning more money. That will be his 2 main priorities because he's not going to join a club capable of winning the title.

Norwich would be a great move....then when he moves on from them in a couple of years we get a few more million after the % sell on fee comes in.

If he went to the gunners he might never move.

He shouldnt go anywhere near Norwich...

    Ruddy
    Whittaker Martin Van Dijk Olsson
    Howson Tettey Johnson

Will be like a 1 man defence.

Imagine going from Gordon, Lustig, Denayer, Izaguirre, Brown, Bitton and Johansen around you to that mob. Used to playing football from the back and freedom to go forward, to backs to the wall struggling.

He should wait for a better team like Swansea, Everton, Southampton or Spurs or not move.
