So this thread is essentially unsubstantiated conjecture and speculation, as ever?

    Breaking news ideally involves news.

He made it clear he would go if we didn't get to CL.

I think he'd have stayed another year if we'd made the CL, mate. For a guy with his talent and ambition, a year in the SPL without CL football is a whole year of his career wasted. I can't blame him.

We could rake in £15m for him and still not spend a penny replacing him.

Fed up with all this now

The vast majority of foreign players would choose any team in the EPL over Celtic. Many others choose Celtic as a stepping stone to any team in the EPL.

I don't like it - I despise the EPL and its over-hyped 'best league in the world' pish - but even I can't deny that is the basic situation here.

Taking it out on VVD is futile. He put in a decent shift when he was with us. Don't really see the point in having a go at him for doing what we always knew he would.

Sell him, bank the money, and then be told it was too late to replace him. Brilliant.

If I was offered Europa League football at slight less money I would take that over playing with * at Sunderland like Altidore

I completely agree but my point is that that is not the way most foreign players think.

I repeat: I despise the EPL. Unfortunately the vast majority of players in the SPL, whether they be Scottish or foreign, do not. They will choose the EPL over the SPL (and Europa League) every time, regardless of the logic.

Thing is, he will quite likely treble his wages wherever he goes in the prem.

I don't think he has to worry TBH. He's good enough that he'll get an EPL team if Sunderland go down and, yes, giving up Europa League football for a place in one of the top 4 leagues in the world, absolutely. He'll play Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea twice, all of whom are better than anyone in our EL group. That's 10 games right there. Then he'll be playing Spurs, Newcastle Villa, Everton, etc instead of SPL teams. There's just no comparison.
