You seem to forget Efe's started playing with the confidence he has now since big Virgil arrived at the club. You say you don't have anything against Virgil, yet you're so keen to point out every bad move he's made since his arrival.

Virgil has been outstanding in the SPL, but that's hardly a ringing endorsement for a player!

He's not done it in the CL as Wanyama did.

Also worth noting that Van Gaal remains unconvinced.

£8 million sounds like a very good return for him!

If you rate your major mistakes on goals conceded or team-mates hung out to dry, then yes, maybe 2 could be right.

However, he has had a *-load of 'near misses' where he's contrived to make an absolute * of a no-threat situation and he's been dug out of the hole by a team-mate, or by the awful standard of his opponent!

He has the physical tools, but not the concentration!

I expect that kind of thing from ignorant arseholes down south but how can any Celtic fan question Virgil's quality? We see him week in, week out. It matters not a * that he plays in Scotland. He's the best centre-half I've seen at Celtic Park in my lifetime. His talent is obvious. Surely we're not at the stage where we can't judge the quality of our own * players. * me.

I guess you're right... Van Gaal is such a * manager that he's not likely to have made an effort to investigate the qualities of the players at his disposal. Even if he could be arsed, he probably doesn't own a DVD player, so wouldn't be able to watch his highlights reel!

Yep - seen him week in week out in the SPL... which is a turgid league!

Truth be told, any good player should stroll their way through a domestic season in this league (particularly if they play for a team that is so far ahead of the competition as Celtic is).

His value will be dictated by the market - not by fans on a club forum. So far, no-ones making any big noises about him and his national coach doesn't seem interested. I expect the lower to mid-table PL teams to come sniffing with £8 million-ish bids.

Would be a good bit of financial business by the club, but not so clever for the team.

I'd rather he stayed for at least another season

You probably don't know Van Gaal that well. :smiley-laughing002: If people in The Netherlands talking about how Virgil should get a chance, the chance of him being selected will probably drop. He's good manager, but a * as well. But here's hoping I'm talking out of my * and he'll get selected for the World Cup. :50:

£8 Million? No chance. Boumsong was £8 million, Van Dijk is better, played more games, only 1 year less on his contract than Boumsong had and footballers are just more expensive these days.

Aye... I'm sure all potential suitors will be thinking of the Boumsong deal when they're preparing their bids. I can just see it...

The Special One - "so Mr Lawell, how much do you want for this Virgil Van Dijk".
Pistol Pete - "well Mr Mourinho, you do realise that Boumsong went for £8 million".
The Special One - "Boumsong, eh. That was the big strong player who strolled it in the SPL was it not".
Pistol Pete - "aye, that's the felly".
The Special One - "the one who was way out of his depth in the Premiership".
Pistol Pete - "erm, yeah... I'll get my coat will I".

Was Boumsong even good at the old club?

I barely mind him playing but he was always a big clumsy player, basically a poor mans Bobo, atleast Bobo could defend. Souness probably just done them a favour as they were in a lot of debt at the time, think he also signed Tugay for decent money when he was about 32 and Barry Squarebaw when he managed in England, pretty sure Souness got EBT money too even though he was nothing to do with the huns, probably a backhander from Murray for getting clubs to sign them.

You can't go about rating football players values on the basis of what someone else was sold for 10 years ago! Especially someone whose transfer contributed to the widely-held notion that 'rated' players from the SPL are a massive gamble for Premiership teams.

The 'market' dictates players worth, and like it or not, our 'market, is toy-town!

The facts are this... VVD has been excellent for us in the SPL, but that alone won't make him a big-money target. Had he performed well in the CL (as Wanyama did), then yes, he would be worth a fair bit. He didn't though, so expect low-ball offers for him!
