If he keeps going the way he's going I can see him leaving at the end of the season for a hefty profit, unfortunately.

I knew by the look of this guy as soon as I saw him, he looks a class act in every way possible :icon_mrgreen:

Suprised we got him, so far he looks the kind of £12million defender the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Roma, Dortmund, Atletico Madrid etc would sign.

How we managed to snap up a 22 year old centre back who (while 21) made the Eredivisie team of the season for a mere £2.6m is beyond comprehension.

Van Dijk was brought in to make us solid at the back, he has had a very good start to his Celtic career, and looks a great buy. Why anyone would then want him to move into midfield is beyond me. It would be like the equivalent of saying that Wanyama should have been moved to centre half last year. It would be madness.

Call me a pessimist... but I'm quite worried about this guy.

Not because I think he's not good, quite the opposite, he's fantastic, but it just seems like all too familiar a story. Remember what Izzy and Kayal were like on their first seasons here, absolutely brilliant, all the fans were raving, just like we are about big Virgil.

We all know what happened to both of them and I just hope that we get a bit of luck and for once we can have a player that has a great first season and continues on from there.

Also I can see why people are saying that it would be nice to see him in midfield, his passing is good but his bursting runs into space would be a nice addition to our current midfield (I think we miss that without Ledley).

But he's just far too good a defender to have anywhere else on the park, and that's the bottom line.

There was also a reason behind Kayal & Izaguirre's poor form. Both sustained pretty bad injuries. And neither have fully recovered from them in my opinion. Kayal because he can't seem to put a run of games together injury free, and Izaguirre isn't mentally over his injury yet I don't think.

    That's exactly my point.

Sorry I might not have made it clear, but I was trying to say that I was worried about this guy getting a really bad injury after playing so well and never being the same.

For me he's one of the best young centre-backs in Europe. Expeditious, not slow, skilled and intelligent.

No offence but Van Dijk's the one in the Celtic shirt.

Football fans are so fickle. Met a few Dutch guys that heavily rated VD so I'm not surprised that he's turned out to be class for us.

Regarding Izzi and kayal , Izzi he been good this season still really glad he's with us.

It's not to late for Kayal to turn it around for us either.

To be honest against Motherwell both him and Efe made our CM's completely redundant for the most part. Everytime they brought the ball up they were able to advance it to the final third, wether by beating players or moving across halfway and finding an out ball. Really impressed with both this season but Virgil just seems to half that confidence and assurance on the ball.

He must be showing a great free kick in training as well because seeing the free-kick egos of Commons, Mulgrew and Stokesy step aside to let him have a strike is a big big deal.

I thought he was really * in the pre-season and early on but what a player he is becoming.

I haven't been this impressed with a Celtic defender in a LONG time.
