You don't necessarily have to be a brute to defend well. He has been shaky at times so far, but is just settling in. You need to give him time.

Kieranc - he's not the type of defender we need. Once again yesterday we concede from a long throw in. We need an out out no nonsense centre back who would go through a brick wall.

Van Dijk has all the attributes necessary to become a top draw centre back. Big, tall and strong but with good pace and reading of the game. Seems to be equally composed at playing it out from the back as well as just humping it on occasion.

The fact that he, and the rest of our team, played * against some Kazakh sheep-cullers does not and should not mask the fact that he was an excellent signing and will be yet another player we turn a huge profit on in a few years time.

Anyone writing him off now is retarded. But given what happened to Wilson, Lustig and countless others, it's safe to say we have an incredibly large number of retards in our support.

    Are you living in 1985?

You simply don't get them any more. The only top central defenders these days who could be described as "solid" brick wall type *, are also excellent on the ball and are very good footballers, i.e. Kompany and Thigao Silva.

The Bobo Balde's and Mick McCarthy's of this world are, well, not in this world any more. Get over it and give support to a talented young Celtic player.

Van Dijk done nothing wrong at the Throw-in. He held the position he was obviously designated.

    Which wasn't his fault.

    1) Forster should've collected the ball before Ambrose headed it out for a throw-in.

    2) Emilio should've defended the throw better instead of heading it into the six yard box.

    3) Mulgrew and Forster should've been more aware of where the ball was after the failed overhead kick.

You're being very harsh on Van Dijk.

So far he hasn't looked good enough, but I'll reserve my proper opinion of him after a few more games.

Played quite good in his first 2 proper games imo.

But some on here wouldn't be happy unless he made 3 last man goal saving tackles, cleared 2 off the line and scored from a corner....

    What a performance.

Big man looks like he will weigh in with a few goals this season.

Looks very good on the ball, very strong and good in the air.

Unsure about his reading of the game, marking and stuff though as he's not really been tested a lot so far.

Quite a similar player to Mulgrew really.

Looks comfortable on the ball but his running foward may get us caught out on counter attack but was impressed today
