He had a great scoring record for PSV. He only played 3 games for Villa. I think he had his leg broken.

Did you honestly have to Google churlish? Wow, surely that's as common a word in British parlance as it is in ours? I don't know if you're being facetious or not, but nine out of ten people in the street must know the meaning of churlish...

Offence and upset have no bearing on what I'm saying, it's simply not a relevant or appropriate discussion to have in a thread dedicated to careers cut short by, in non-football terms, relatively (relative to death) minor injuries. The two cannot be conflated.

You seemed to be saying that the thrust of my post was borne of an attempt to quash a topic that might offend, for my sake or the sake of others, but that is plainly not the case.

The whole business of being offended is an anathema to me, and I despise the 'offended' brigade. There is right and wrong in this world, there is no 'offensive'. Embrace right, combat wrong, but by *, do not be, or allow yourself to become, offended.

Without being facetious, I have never known a person in the street who speaks like a 16th Century Aristocrat :smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002:

The answer is no - I have never heard of the word "churlish", in fact I regularly have to use Google to decipher some of your posts :smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002::smiley-laughing002::icon_mrgreen:

Anyway, I'm getting a sore head now, my peanut-sized brain cannot take anymore of this.........

Mr Fawlty, as a newer member of the forum can I ask what are you? Male or female? How old? Where are you from? What do you do for a living?

I have never witnessed such perfect sentence construction in my life. Everything you write is poetic :56:

I feel as if i want to just sit down and have you read me stories by an old fire :smiley-laughing002:

Tbh I dont have a clue what Churlish, Parlance or Conflated mean.

Fawlty would have got the pish ripped right out him if he was using that patter in Glasgow.

Most definitely Sir, one could indeed have had their face lacerated with a finely edged precision object such as a bayonet and be left displaying a disfigured profile for the remainder of their existence.

Hmm, will have to chalk it up as a matter of dialectical difference, then, it's quite a common word in New Zealand English.

I honestly don't get this whole aristocrat thing, I'm just a grammar pedant (hence, ditch the capital C and A...) who likes florid language. Writing and speaking are very much two intrinsically separate mediums, for me.

I only apply my pedantry to my own posts, I'm no grammar *, I wouldn't dream of pulling another person up on their grammar, save as an aside or quip in the context of a discussion concerning the topic.

It's a good thing I'm able to differentiate between spoken English and written English, then, not that I talk an awful lot anyway.

Dour, male, 19, New Zealand, and not an awful lot.

I've been mulling about for a couple of years, am trying to pursue tertiary education at the moment, though.

I'll disregard the latter half of your post, I'm not sure if I should be flattered or disturbed...

    (I jest)

What a horrid sentence, structurally speaking...

I seem to remember Neil Lennon using the word churlish in a press conference or pre/post match interview.

And had it not been for injuries, he could still be achieving. But injuries have ruined him.
