One thing people should realize is that we will make something like £4 million less from season ticket sales this year, which will have to be subsidized by the champions league money. I can't see us spending more than £6 million

We definitely don't need 2 wingers and an attacking midfielder. We need 1 more player like Forrest, who is fast and tricky and can get behind the fullback.

I'd be delighted if we signed Russell, who can play out wide or upfront, Tonev who is a winger and the striker Balde.

Assuming Miku and Lassad go, that would leave us with

Wingers/Attacking midfielder: Forrest, Commons, McGeouch, Rogic, Tonev, Samaras

Strikers: Hooper, Stokes, Watt, Russell, Balde

Even if Hooper went we'd be set going forward.

We'd never be able to keep more than that happy.

I think some people just pluck a figure out of the sky and think we should be spending that amount. As long as the player that comes in is of a quality that we are after then i'm happy. As we have seen in Lennon's time here, the cheap option is sometimes the best option (as long as there is a good scout at the club), which we have in John Park. I would rather we paid off our debt, and went about our business how we are currently, rather than chase the dream for a bit extra success and rack up needless debt. Especially when success is never guarenteed.

I didn't pluck any figures from the sky mate i obv dont know what the budget will be and neither do you, i am just saying for example.

I totally agree with you in terms of the money we spend and the players we have bought the past few seasons i'm basically just saying surely there will be enough on the table for lennon to get his targets regardless of whether £1m or £3m on a specific position.

End of the day, neither of us can say for certain if Rogic or McGeouch are long term options for a CAM role. Neither has had much game time in that role for Celtic. But considering that there are higher priorities, striker and centre half, we should give these two a chance before spending our precious transfer kitty on a position where we have two young prospects waiting for their chance.

Without selling anyone I'd say the max we would spend would be £4 million max.

With £10 million sales I'd think we would spend up to £8 million.

£15 million then £10 million spend at most.

£20 million then £12 million at most.

We would never spend 100% of player sales, I'd imagine 75% at most.

We are not a buying club and wont be for the foreseeable future.

I hope we buy Russell, a targetman, creative AM and a CB.

I just posted this in the Johnny Russell thread before I noticed this thread:

Tom De Sutter on a free seems like a complete no-brainer, for me. I'd be absolutely delighted if we got him, Russell and Tonev. That's £3-3.5m for 3 right good players. You'd think we'd then have about £3m for a good leader of a CB. I'd also like to see Bannan for £2m, a cheap LB, and a replacement for Wanyama at no more than £3m.

Around £13m for 7 players, probably all completely paid off by Wanyama and Hooper's transfer fees, without even touching that CL money we earned this year.

I wish it were all that simple, but it probably won't turn out that way.

We are a club who buys to sell, so if we think we can take a guy and sell him on for £10-15m, I don't see why we wouldn't spend £5m to get him (if we were sure about his potential resale value).

As for not spending 100% of player sales, this season we have the CL money (that we've just made) to cover that, so I think we might well spend 100% of the money we make from transfers. We did it when McGeady left.

Understand what your saying mate and Tonev (touchwood we get him lol) will help us be more creative. The type of player i'm looking for and i'm sure a lot of fans have been missing for years is a Lubo style player, for the entertainment side.

I disagree. I think CL money will go towards youth academy and scouting.

Id never pay £2million for Bannan. We have McGeouch, Twardzik and Rogic who are all younger and as good as him. We dont need a left-back either, when we have 2 quality right-backs, one of whom can play there as can Mulgrew and Chalmers and even Ledley. We have more than enough in the squad already to deal with any left-back injuries.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010–11_Celtic_F.C._season#Transfers

We spent 65% of player sales that season mate.

I agree with what you are saying though, if you know a £5 million player is definitely going to sell for £10 million then why not buy him?
The answer is probably the risk involved in spending £5 million on one player, what if our £5 million player gets injured or just doesnt perform (see Juarez, Miku who was a supposed £8 million player).

I hate being negative, and I hope we really build our squad to be even better, but I am just a tad cautious, knowing what our board can be like with finances.

Another thing is season tickets, will the board be paranoid about loss of revenue next season, since it looks like there will be a drop in season ticket sales next year.

I agree to a certain extent on Bannan, in that we don't exactly need him; he'd just give us more depth at that position.

Again, at LB, it's about depth and a credible challenge to Izaguirre. The only other designated LB at the club is Chalmers, who I'd be more than happy to see play cetain SPL games, but we need someone who will challenge Izzy and therefore force him to up his game.

EDIT: I also think Bannan's currently ahead of Twardzik and McGeouch, and is at least equal to Rogic. He's not an essential buy, but I'd like to see him here.

For anyone that's interested, our player sales/spend for the last couple of seasons.

Figures are not exact, but probably as close as you can get .

If those figures are near accurate then I imagine a fair amount of the CL money will go to paying those fees.

Added in CL money from the previous season and your right.

The seasons where we were in the CL group stages the year before, we generally tend to spend more.

I think we'll have have a fairly decent transfer window if the current rumours are to be believed

    Tonev for £2million

Russell for £1 million or thereabouts

Another striker might be needed depending on how the club feels about Russell/Stokes/Watt being our main strike force (assuming Hooper leaves). I would like to see a slightly more experienced striker brought in for Europe.

For a creative midfielder I would imagine we would probably need to pay good amount to sign one. I would maybe give Rogic a run of games to see how he fits in, but obviously he's still quite young.

In regards to a CB I think we missed a good one in Ciani last year. I would like to see one but personally don't see it happening.

All in all I could see use spending about £4 million, anything more than that would be great.

Saw Ciani in the Coppa Italia final at the weekend. Would still bite your hand off for him.
